Dual Power

Postby tuckertrucker » Tue Jul 04, 2017 9:05 am

just about to set up a dual power system to get domestic power users like fridges, lights (non driving), chargers, amps etc off the main starting batteries. Problem is, the truck is a 24v safari. Would it be a better idea to set up a second 24v domestic system that can be charged with the main, and running a 12v reducer off it for the accerssories?
Or..... should I set up a 12v system and find another way to charge it?

Getting dangerously close to running flat an automatic 24v diesel way to often and dont like starting the engine to keep the start batteries up

Do you have room for a second 12v alternator? Then run an auxiallry loom to a single deep cycle 12 volt battery radio, 2way, led lights, fridge etc. The other option is to get a v.s.r and wire it to the second battery + post before the earth to body/engine then to aux battery. Either option will cost roughly the same I think as the 12v alt could come from any vehicle and wouldn't have to be very high output. 50 amp for example. , I used to run dual alt/dual battery system that was bridged when the starter was cranked or "winch in" was pressed(albeit 12 volt both sides) but principle is the same .
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

Would suggest against tapping off the 12v battery in the 24v system. You will end up with one flat battery.
Either stand alone 12v alt,
Or 12v house battery(s?) And a 24v -12v charger to charge the house battery. A dc-dc charger or similar
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....

cheers, was thinking they'd be the options. Jaycar would sell the appropriate dc-dc charger?

Anything Jaycar has you can get for %10 of the cost on aliexpress. Sometimes the same brand too.
