ecotec v6 commodore no spark?

Postby hello24 » Sun Nov 25, 2012 9:44 pm

have just been undergoing a v6 commodore 3.8 ecotec conversion on the old prado just trying to finishing off the last details which include actually getting the engine running..... motor is out of a vt commodore i have fitted a computer chip to remove the security system off trademe and just thought it would start if i wired power to the ecu and an ignition wire, but no go. so i removed a plug and what do you know, no spark. is there more to wiring the ecu then ihave done? if anyone has any experience with the ecotec engine and these vats removed ecu chips and wiring any help would be much appreciated.

Have you got any wiring diagrams? I have just finished wiring up VY V8 into a mates jet boat and it needed multiple ignition feeds to computer and coils/modules, injectors etc

A quick google and I found this diagram. Shows ignition to fuel injectors, ignition module, air flow sensor and a couple to computer. Then there's battery supply and earths

Yeah the injectors will need ignition power directly to them then the computer switches them. The diagram shows this wire coming from EFI relay that would've been in the car. If you look at all the injectors one wire at each should be the same colour. Then in your loom somewhere you should be able to find this wire not being connected to anything. Maybe at a plug that doesn't connect to anything

yea thanks got it sorted now had it wired but was a faulty relay, it was brand new aswell.... replaced it with a good one and she sparked into life but wouldnt idle...... but could be a combination of a lot of things oxy sensors not installed, old plugs mabe a little diesel still left in the tank  but will get radiator all hooked up and give her a good running see where we are from there..

By the looks of the diagram you need to wire ignition to the airflow meter. Which maybe why it didn't want to idle.
Also were did you get the engine and bellhousing from? I presume the bellhousing is from an auto v6 rodeo?
Are you leaving the Toyota computer there to run the automatic?

yea the bell housing is from a 03+ rodeo. they use the same auto...
my plan is to control the auto manualy without a computer.
pm if you are interested any more on the conversion can answer any questions..
I have the afm and ignition wired aswell but it fires up but it dies strait away after will try filling the tank with fuel to dilute any left over diesel.... but should it run and idle semi fine without the oxy sensors installed?

Yeah should run pretty fine without oxy sensors they don't do much til it's warmed up a bit

Still sounds like airflow meter. Make sure you don't have an air leak after airflow meter where engine can suck in unmetered air
You could plug the oxy sensors in and try that as well

aha yes the now unused egr port is still open and will be letting air in and bypassing the afm. would this effect the engine so drasticly was on my todo list to block

Yeah looks like they have a decent size hole. Could hold ya finger over the hole and get someone to start it for you
