FJ40 alternator upgrade

Postby antidamage » Wed Aug 14, 2013 8:03 pm

I'm looking to upgrade the 45A alternator in my FJ40 to something around 100A.

After a bit of research it sounds like I want a Denso-style replacement with an internal regulator, some 2 gauge wire and a voltmeter. I'll run the 2 gauge to the battery, the other wire to the ignition via the voltmeter and bypass the stock ammeter. I'll also have to replace the pulley head with the one from my stock alternator. I may also need to grind away some of the bracket to make it fit.

By the sounds of it this is all I'll need to do. Will I need to improve the ignition wiring at all? It seems like most of the plugs, while varied, are just straight forward. I may also need some kind of a diode on the ignition.

Any advice? Can anyone recommend a specific alternator? I've been browsing the Ashdown-Ingram website and saw some likely candidates. I've been thinking about the DXA433 on page 143 of this catalogue:

A drop-in replacement would be an RXA406 a couple of pages back.
