Z20 nissan ignition problem

Postby mark 55 » Mon Sep 02, 2013 7:46 pm

my Z20 1988 4wd keeps burning out points. Over the last 18 months, everything has been replaced and tested by two different auto electricians and my local garage but it now only seems to get about 300 km's before it starts missing and then ultimately burns out the points. No-one seems to be able to diagnose the problem and i'm getting a bit over it, people just bolting on new stuff and nothing getting better. Can anyone suggest someone in Otago that might have any idea? thanks

Condenser would be first suspect.

Cheers

thanks Andy, the condensor is just one of the many things that have been replaced.Someone suggested that, even though each individual component tests as good, when they're all after market pieces , they may not end up being collectivly compatable.

Too much current running through system caused by eg wrong coil?
Does it have a ballast resistor wired up to coil?
If lots of parts have been swapped there becomes a higher chance that incorrect parts have been fitted.
Points burning is usually from old age, or failed/ wrong size condensor.
