Regarding work lamps...
Here's the relevant link to "cosmetic lamps" in the WoF VIRM.
http://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/v ... etic-lamps
The reference to "work lamps" is in table 4-15-1.

States under the heading "other lighting equipment not requiring inspection"
-Work lamps
White or amber high-intensity lamps that are not necessary for the operation of the vehicle but are designed to illuminate the area around the vehicle or the vehicle itself
-Scene lamps
Work lamps designed to provide a fixed or movable beam of light to illuminate the area around the vehicle or the vehicle itself
-Alley lamps
Work lamps designed primarily to provide a fixed or movable beam of light to the side of the vehicle it is fitted to

Doesn't matter how they are wired up as they don't require being inspected.
A WoF AVI isn't to inspect them. Simple.

It amazes me how many WoF AVI's seem to make up their own shit.
It is very plain in the regs as to what passes and fails.
If an AVI is unsure about something, they are to refer it to an appropriate authority (either LVV certifier or whoever).
We get many people bringing their vehicles into work that have failed elsewhere for some lame ass idea someone came up with. Surprisingly, most of these cockups are from testing station type outfits.

Thank you very much indeed, I am armed and dangerous once again. 8)

I was told to either remove the lights, ask the Certifier to add them to the cert or find the appropriate regs to prove otherwise (and
no we will not accept something written on paper
, but the links you provided have the web address attached to them so there is no disputing it now)!

Maybe I should come to you guys in future for my WOF's
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

That's because most of the inspectors are not mechanics, they just go on a course and then get to check your car is safe.

And work lamps can only be used offroad, so yea, thats fine for what you want.
Otherwise they have to be wired to work only with highbeam, but can have a switch so you can turn off while still highbeams on (ie must not go with low beams).
Hope that helps....

That's just answered my question regarding wiring my lights up. Fitted a rally car bonnet mount 4 spot housing to the front of my Discovery and wondered why it didn't fail WOF. Thought there too many spots at first but it must be due to me having a separate switch to turn them on independent from high and low. Its only got 4x 130 watt bulbs so makes night day perfectly on forest roads.

Yup in a nutshell.
Its been a few years since I was on the tools but we had the same issue then.
Guys have been in NZ five minutes and checking cars for WOFs.
No idea what they are doing but checking your car is safe??.
Just remember in NZ 1.6mm of tread is A OK apparently. But some other lame as thing will fail.
A safety check and a WOF are very different.

"...well then how about you start the ####### engine, youv'e only had it sitting there with the lights on for the last 15 minutes."
