Marlin XS7 308 f/s

Postby mudgripz » Mon Jul 29, 2013 11:18 pm

Bought this rifle recently but am really after a 243 for mixed long range varminting and deer etc. Near new unit fired maybe 40 rounds. Few marks on synthetic stock but action and barrel perfect. Very accurate with nice smooth action.

This model comes out standard with fluted bolt, recessed target crown, pillar bedded action and adjustable trigger.

About $699 new but will sell for $500 which includes about 35 rounds of ammo (worth $70), so a v good deal for someone.

I have a 308 so not needing another, but had a 243 for the same reason. We loaded 65gr hollows for goats and wallaby's, 105gr soft nose for deer. They will deflect if firing through a bit of bush, so you will need a clear shot. Wasn't a problem when I used my deer barrel on the 500a pump action with solids....
Hot Barrels :D, Paul.

Yes its a very good 308 but I've decided to go with a 243 to cover all the game on two particular stations. Can do the lot with just the one rifle and one round - likely the 95gr spitzer boat-tail load. Has to cover long range hares/bunnies, plus occasional pigs, goats and deer. And a few wallabies when I get to Waimate again.

Old 12g slugs certainly plough through anything!!. Some of the rifled slugs also quite accurate in the right barrel out to 100m too - round 2" grouping.

The 65gr projectile out of a 243 must be fair humming - 4000fps?

I think your on the right track, dont shoot the pigs in the shoulder with that round, they will think its a mozzie bite.

I had a .22K-Hornet for the goats/bunnies etc, that was awesome and cheaper to load.
Cant quite remember the specs for loading the 243, think we aimed for around 3800-3900fps to go easy on the cases.

We would shoot the Dama Wallaby around the Lakes in Rotorua, we had a station there we went 2-3 times a year.
The owner loved it as we would grab what meat we wanted and leave the rest there, he would go around a few weeks later with his pig dogs and get the pork, it was a grin-grin situation :D
Would team up in pairs with a .22or.222or.243 and 12g that would cover short and long range shots. Best was 83 in two nights, some times only 6 or so. Still just great to get out. :)

.243
65 grain round 3200-3521fps
55 grain 3388-3721 fps depending on powder
pressure created around 56538-58846 psi
just for interest
would like a 308 but the $$ wont go that far :( :( :(
