Lake Coleridge recovery today.

Postby petefj40 » Tue Aug 31, 2010 7:29 pm

Rick at 4X4 Accessories asked me yesterday if I'd like to recover a fellas Isuzu truck near Lake Coleridge Tuesday. I was keen. Left 9am this morning.
Though the pictures make the job look to easy. It was actually harder than it looked.
I had to land anchor my truck before winching his back up onto the track. Sounds easy. But once i got his truck out of the hole and close to the track, I thought I'd snatch his truck and tow it out under his an my trucks power. Well. After I broke a front right CV everything changed.

I'm glad to say we made it back home no problems.
He's offered to pay for the CV. (young fella at Uni) I'm greatfull he offered.

Really enjoyed the experience.

When i heard it snap, I thought "Longs" straight away.

But then on the way home i thought nah.
I have a couple of spare 60 series CV's. So I'll use them first.
And it's not like the 40 get's the abuse that the buggy gets.
I was surprised the 40's CV's lasted as long as they have. They are the original ones that were in it when I first brought the truck 4 years ago.

I guess that would be the most financially responsible course of action. Of course when they are all gone...

Funds are there. But after spending just over $2000 on the last breakage, i thought I better try and make the funds last a little longer. :D

Hear are some more pix.
Beautiful country views!!

Point taken.
But hey, the last time I saw someone change one on the track it took him WAY longer than 15 minutes. AND he had a large flat area to do it on. That was H20LOVERs truck at Pommy Ricks place last year.

While it's broke it's made it farken hard to turn corners. Must be binding up in there. 2 wheel drive back through the tracks home was an effort.

Hi Pete
If you have a diff lock in the front, I wouldn't piss around with the 60 CVs. Even my hilux would blow them every 2nd trip.

Go straight for "Longs"

Cheers Richard

even better go 80 series coiled front end, bigger brakes, better ride, fairly indestructible CVs

There is nothing available in a factory cv that is as strong as Bobby's gear, and there is plenty of testing to back that up. But the 80 series wouldn't be a bad mod, Unfortunatly the same bullshit design that plagues all cruisers (and pootrols) is the crap hanging under the axles. It is not that often that you get hung up on a diff head (they just tend to drag through) but the spring packs and under mounted control arms get you hung up heaps.

Somehow I doubt we will see Mog axles on it, but it would be way cool. :P
