Endean road Rotorua

Postby sandman1977 » Sun Nov 03, 2013 7:44 pm

Endean road runs from paridise valley road to South road which runs north south between Mamaku and Tokoroa. Endean road was driveable untill about late 1990s when PF Olsen trashed the road with logging. And massive anti vehicle pits. A petition (hand legal mechanism to remove gates off public roads) was raised under the local body act 1977 to remove. The obstructions and Walking Access have help get access restored

The big hole on Endean road is out side (disputable) of the paper road so a new track needs to be formed around the hole which requires a bit of work to get the road open again.

Some locals have made a start on the by passing/ fulling in the hole but some more (easy) digging is required

Please used 4wd on this track so it does not get to rutted the track is mostly pumice and CNI ash

Some pretty DOC land on route to the hole and some rugged tracks off the road

The forest is owned by the Chinese government and as part of the sale public access must be maintained

Worth a look but bring a spade to help get the road open.

Single Proper 4wd on road tires (not mums Volvo) will get you to the Hole

Endean road is open.

The new Rotorua Mayor and Dave Donaldson and help from a few of my other friend have manage to get the road open

Be warned their is a narrow bit that crossed over a massive pit dug by PF Olsen and 2x other holes that need some more work to get some less capable wagon across

Check out my photos on google earth to get a ideal of what the track looks like

The rock needs a few whacks with a slegde hammer and cold chisel or a bit more dirt form the bank above will help

The narrow bit has changed abit since this video was taken and sukuzi and quad, horse have no problems

Please look after this track so every one can enjoy it

Attached are GPS and Google earth files of Great west and Endean road so you do not venture onto private land

Great west road has illegal pine trees and (about 16) illegal fences all over it

If this annoys you please send Andy Bell at the Rotorua District council an email Andy.Bell@rdc.govt.nz.

Converted those waypoints to a track in my EasyGPS
It might be worth a look next time I am down that way. Thanks very much.

A few guys from our club went out a couple of weekends ago. Was a fun day but bog holes have got quite a bit bigger than last year. First hole only a couple of hundred metres in had to winch out of (Rubicon on 35 Simexes with lockers). We drained a few of the holes and did some spade work to improve others. Worked our way around the "Squeze" to find the gate into the forestry has been replaced with a heavy duty unit.
Would post pics but not sure how?
