tracks arround Hamilton/Waikato area

Post by natedogg »

Hi All,

long time user, 1st time poster.

New the the 4wd scene and keen to get into it.

I've been searching hard for places to go 4wding arround the hamilton/waikato area, and cant find much more than Thompson's track in TeAroha.

lady at the info centre said that you typically need a winch to get up there.

Im just a beginner (i.e. i dont have a winch)

1993 terrano R3m.
only mods are mud tires and front/rear recovery points.

anybody have any good suggestions of tracks i can try out around here?

any help greatly appreciated.

(I have ordered the 4wd North Island book that aparently has 102 tracks, but its taking ages to arrive - and im keen to get into it)

cheers

Nathan

Hey Nathan,welcome aboard :D

tracks around hamilton are few and far between unless you know a farmer. plenty of tracks in the waikato/coro/BOP area tho but most of which would probably kill your truck  having said that, keep your eyes on the forums and be ready to come out on some trips with us, were not allways doing hard core stuff  and thomo's from this side to the top is pretty doable by most vehicles and a pretty good test track for you to get used to your vehicle....just dont venture over the other side

see you out there some time :D

Hi Fellas

Me (Jinx) been here for only a little while. I'm Hamilton based also. I'm in the Cozzie four wheelers (Hamilton Cossie club). only a small number of us but we try to get out every now and then. I didnt know there was a Hamilton ORE BBQ on?, but I had a bloody boring family thing on the same day. Would have been a good excuse to leave early and get muddy by the looks of the vids Wopass has posted. Nice.

Hi Wopass, probably only half a dozen-ish. looking at taking it easy though as we dont want to scare the newer chaps (and I dont want to break anything). Have a couple of guys possibly interested in joining our Cozzie 4x4 club so thought we'd show them Thompsons track. Looking at going up the western side (easy side) to the look out and back down, maybe a play around half way etc... Maybe you guys with the mean as wagons could show us some tricks or two?. Natedogg's keen to check it out too. should be fun - cheers Mike.

Thats a bit of an odd question there mate. You wanna go 4wheeling, but what, you don't want to travel out ofthe city limits??

Just kidding ;)

Thompsons by definition is right on your back door step.

4WD tracks that are open to the public generally unmaintained legal roads. The remoteness of these roads are the reason they are not maintained by the council. If they were nice and close to town, they would be maintained by the council, and therefore would not be good for 4wheel drive recreational activities.

Due the above, you generally have to travel away from the city to the remote areas, where these tracks are generally located.

More on that later...........;)

yes i see your point.

was more meaning something i could do one afternoon after work. having said that thompsons is only 40 -45mins away from my house so we should def give that ago.

Just a bit hesitant of getting stuck in the evening and not getting out before dark.
