auto to manual swap in terrano ques..

Post by aero165 »

hi have an auto diesel terrano 1991 model and i am not really enjoying the auto. has anyone swapped the auto for a manual gearbox? i am assuming that a 2.7 diesel navara box would be suitable? what about the rear diffs would i have to swap that as well?
if anyone knows what would be involved i would appreciate any details... what about the petrol pathfinder box could that be used?
cheers

yip, navara gearbox should be ok if its a 4wd type,2wd is useless unless 2wd is ok for you(but why would you in a 4wd vehicle)

havent done this before but as far as swapping it over, you will need a clutch pedal box and a brake pedal box(i think)

possibly also a driveshaft, not sure if they differ.

and all related wiring/pipes/cables

as far as diffs go,if you stick with a terrano greabox you wont need to swap them over,i think they are all the same ratios.

the auto driven diffs are 4.6.....find out what the manual driven terranos are and that will tell you if you need to change them.

no worries dude,

i suggest you do it,if you can have it off the road for a month or so that would be best, rip into it,get a gearbox and what ever else you can think of that you will need, start converting it,then as things become obvious,go source them.

Hey. I have a manual terrano and it preforms heaps better than the auto that I'm parting out currently. Diffs are the same for both. auto box looks a bit shorter so guess you will need driveshaft. Looks like all the extra holes for clutch etc seem to be there with bolt on plates so you should be sweet there.

Just a word of warning with the manuals. They are a bit weak from factory. Blown mine twice although it would appear it was never rebuilt properly the first time. Any td27 box will fit, the turbo ones are the same. Make sure you get a clutch for a turbo though cause the non turbo ones will slip. (I was supplied the wrong one)

Ill have a good look tomorrow and see if i can spot any other differences between the two.

Giday any of u got a 5 speed laying about looking for a home ??? mine stoped working.
We it wont scelect any gears but sorta grinds a bit in reverse if u rev the motor it grinds quite nicley ty.
I havnt pulled it out yet but ive thought i may also be the spiggot shaft berring gone west ?? any thoughts.

oh yet DONT FILL THE BOX THROUGHT THE FILLER HOLE it was cast way to low from the factory drain all oil from the box n fill it up through the gear lever hole.
Thats why most of the 5 speeds have shit them selfs

Hey Long

Sounds like what mine did second time round. Fifth gear fell off the back of the main lay shaft or something. went into some gears but made bad sounds. The also spit the main bearing into the bell housing. either way its a expensive rebuild. I looked at second hand and decided ona rebuild given they are week and could just be buying a time bomb.

It could well be the price some ppl want for a half good box is way way to much so yeh ill pull mine n take a look at it the berrings i can get real cheep so it may not cost that much to rebuild it.
