Dont use PBT Couriers/transport

Had a guy buy an engine off me and it has been sitting on a pallet for 3 weeks now because PBT cant do there jobs properly. What is the point of having a freight company if they cannot pickup something that is on a pallet ready to go, they even asked me to drop the lot off at their depot.

I would not recommend them at all, freightways are now doing the job PBT couldn't do.

I've heard from a chap who used to drive for PBT in Christchurch that they are a very rough and difficult bunch. Rough with freight and very difficult to get payment from.

We use them at work and they have been nothing but great!
I send about 20 shipments a day and the issue rate is far better than any other carriers we have used.

You will get issues whoever you use, just how many, and how they deal/fix them is what makes the differance.

Agree you will get trouble with all companies but have had nothing but troble from PTB , they were rough on the gear beaing shipped that was well packed also .
Just had some stuff taken away by Mainfreight , no hassles and would give them a tick .

i just couldn't understand how a freight company couldn't pickup something that was on a pallet ready to go?? Surely they have a truck with a hydralic tailgate.

Anyway engines been picked up now so its all good.

Bought some stuff off trade-me and the seller used PBT. Took forever to get here. Was picked up promptly from the seller and then PBT took an age to get it to me. Phone calls chasing it up had no effect. :roll:

Can't say I'd reccommend them either.

used them a couple of times before. they have been good for me both times.

castle pacels were a different story used them once stuffed it up sent parcel on the wrong truck and ended up in dunedin not nelson but i gave them the benifit of the doubt and tried on the second thing i sent they were ok just took ages..

have used lyndsays lately cause i work there but the next best on i have used for main centers (dud,inv,nels,coast) is rapid road freighters

Just had a long tube dropped off here by a local freight company. I had been chasing it up and apparently Flyways got as far as Rangiora and couldn't find us to gave up. After the sender chased them up they rung me to ask where i was and I told them I was just out of Rangiora so they decided to use a freight forwarding company to drop it off to me.

I'm still trying to figure what is easier and more cost effective, 7 minute drive to drop something off or organizing another company to do it.

That's the only time we have had flyways used.

Our sagas are with Fastways. Out of the first about 15 completely different freightings with them, 13 were lost, damaged, spilt or very late. Clutch part fell of a truck apparently! One lot turned up in a Mini with an german sheppard drueling over it.

They used to have that logo of a wee man running with a parcel, then they changed it to him standing there on the phone, I guess they had to change it to suit the company performance. Now I see they use both logos, running and ringing! Now that they contract to the RD for deliveries its ALMOST ironed out the problems, except one more recent one we finally found in theirtoo hard bin in the CHCH depo (yep they have a too hard bin)

In business i always found PBT fast and well priced but pretty ruff, flyways are good (had no breakages or damage) and well organised usually but not cheap and not super fast, been using mainfreight latley who have been good (nothing broken) and quick enough but not always super organised a few times my pallets have been sent to auckland and then auckland depo have sent them back to the chch depo ?? but hey can't really win with any of them. Personally i never have any luck with any of them doing private stuff none are any good at delivering to houses so i always do it through the business and try and get who ever im sending it to to give me a business address..

i used to use Mainfreight, as a preferred supplier to work. When they lost 100 planks i got a bit annoyed, when they decided to charge me waaaayyyyy too much on a particular load (identical to the one that came in, but twice the price) I ditched them for RoadFreighters and they were utterly awesome, esp Gary that was at their Napier operation. I now use them out of Hamilton for any frieght that we cant do ourselves and until they cock up (if they do), ill carry on using them.

Used TOLL recently to send an engine to Wanaka from Auckland.

They were great. accepted a Sat morn cash payment rop off despite the fact they were closed (just rang and arranged it on friday)

Train to Dunedun the road freight to Wanaka. address was just a company name and a cell number. Got there no worries on the wednesday it think. Was $200 for engine in crate.

Will use them again

I use Toll as well - mainly for big stuff like engines - been really pleased with their service and never had any problems... they are also keen to look at a diesel engine on a pallet and go - "hmmm, gotta be around 100kg there"

Which suits me - they're probably only out by a couple of hundred kilos

For smaller stuff I use Castle Parcels... good and cheap. Not the quickest, but I don't mind. They move all my springs around the place and in the years I've been doing it had no damage and only had one set of springs go missing for a few days... pretty good track record.

Never used PBT - and thanks to this thread I probably never will. When will companies learn they have to do what they do well?

i bought a towbar for my 80 series of tm in chch .i got it dropped at the pbt depot in chch then pbt freighted it to wgtn.they said it arrived in there depot in wgtn but then couldn,t find it to deliver to me .after lots of phone calls and talking to there nz manager they still couldn,t find it .finally they agreed to pay me what it cost me ($85 ) but then they wouldn,t refund the freight charge($110) because they had freighted it from chch to wgtn.what a bunch of useless wankers . i would never use them again and bad mouth them to any one who asks about freight companys. whew finally got that of my chest

Funny you should say that about the inconsistent charges. I had that aswell just recently with PBT.

They charged me $80 to ship and engine up from Chch. When it turned out to be no good, i sent it back. They charged me $260 to send the identical load back. I winged and bitched and they refunded me the $80 and shipped it all for free :lol:

Also the pallet of stuff that smurf sent up for me from nelson was on PBT, that went smooth as, partially due to Smurfs expert packing. Pallet weighed $160 kg and they charged $167 so can't complain.

I had to do an appraisel inspection on a PBT "B" train (thats the two trailers hooked together on a truck for those who are unsure.) climbed up to the mezzanine floor to check for damage and oh hello a package lying on the top deck. checked the date it was sent and said March, it was October :shock:

. Rang PBT and they picked it up within the hour.

The company I work for has nothing but trouble with PBT.
There over night service isnt..we often refer to it as there "3 day overnight service".
We have had goods lost, arrive dripping wet on the inside but perfectly dry on the outside & damaged.
They once last an item we sent to Timaru...they looked for 2 weeks for it, indisjust the person waiting for it drove to there depot & saw it from the front counter sitting on a shelf.
There main problem is they dont have there own aircraft,so if a truck misses a ferry crossing or breaks down the customer waits.
We are currently pricing up other courier firms & soon our entire company nationwide is going elsewear.

I use TNL freighting when i need stuff here in chch depot to depot its cheaper that way i got a set of 5 rims from Nelson to Hornby over night.

I work in retail. How good a courier company is seems to depend on your courier for the area. Eg at my last job, fast way sucked big time, current job they seem to be allright. There are some constants though.

Courier post probably cost the most, but damn they are reliable. (this is who we use)

NZ couriers, no complaints, they just arent brilliant like courier post.

Fastway depots seem to have no order. (so you better hope your courier is good)

PBT are f#@*&% hopeless (but in his defence the courier that does us is pretty good) Thankfully almost none of our suppliers use PBT now.

Mainfreight are pretty good at the mo.

I do know a freight company who lost a washing machine, assumed it was stolen by a staff member, went to staff members house, didnt find washing mashine, did find plasma screens etc that they didnt yet know were stolen, found missing washing machine 2 week later under a box in the depot. crazy. (p.s this was not pbt)

Yeah the driver has heaps to do with it, depending how far they take it though.

I've delt with just about all the companies mentioned and more and I would rate PBT ay. Like their computer system to.

Pace would have to be the best company ever though.

And the courier post dudes at chch airport are useless. Sent a cage for chch (which have no tape on them) to Dunedin, and blamed us for not putting enough tape on the Dunedin cages....:S

PBT's rep is deserved

Best service thus far ie: never had need to complain is with Toll.

I would have to agree that it is not the company as such, but its drivers that let it down.

I won an auction on TM and waited 6 working days for the courier PBT to deliver said item, from the inner city (Chch) to Bexley!

After several enquiries it was found the driver had no deliveries in my area so he duly left the item in his outbox!

Rang one of our supliers today about 10am. ordered product, asked for sat delivery. Supplier said, "I'll go down the road and use courier post instead of our usuall courier, that way you might actually get it on sat" Product turned up this afternoon. stoked.

My old man works for the forklift company that supplies PBT with forklifts- they refer to them as smash palace, the worst place by far for wrecking the forklifts. Probably while they have your goods on them!
