Fitting the winch to my Discovery

Post by Cloggy_NZ »

I was one of the people taking advantage of the bulk winch deal done between ORE members and Spy Performance, the importer of Runva winches into New Zealand.
This is the winch as it arrived. I bought the new EWX12000 model figuring too much grunt is never enough and not enough pull would be a pain in the arse. 12000lbs of pull is enough to pull 2x Discovery's straight up in the air.
Also bought a mounting plate to make the installation job a little easier.

Image

Afer a bit of heavy duty grinding and welding the mounting plate ended up as a mounting tray. A quick flick with a spray bomb and the tray is ready for mounting.

Image

Fits just nicely :D
Uses the standard bumper mounting bolts which are sleeved through the chassis. I increased the bolt size from 10mm to 1/2" UNF.
Also put a 5th bolt at the rear of the tray as an extra measure.

And with the winch in place. Have mounted the winch as far back as possible to bring the weight as close to the axle as possible.

Image

This Disco is fitted with a winch? :o
Really?

The standard grille fits nicely and hides the winch from view. Just gotta make me a fang-dangle little trap door to get at the clutch.

Image

Once this is all fitted and wired I plan to make myself a nice heavy duty bumper out of some 3mm plate. Then just the fairlead (or hawse when we get the plasma rope) will show.

Splendid old chap, just splendid. :thumright:

I like the way you used the mounting plate, chopped and re-welded it. This has given me some ideas for the Terrano.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Very nice. Can you share how much for the winch and mount plate?

Got any finished pics yet?

Sorry, no finished pics yet as the installation isn't finished. Spend a couple of hours today running some of the wiring, mounting the solenoid, making room for the second battery etc.
Winch was a special deal, $550 for the winch including wireless remote, $85 for the mounting plate.

Are you sure you will have enough pulling power with the 12000lb? Be carefull mate, you might end up with a stretched limo.

Keep your eyes on the new posts. I do believe there may be another attempt coming up at getting another bulk deal underway.
All lot will depend how happy the first lot of purchasers are with their batch of winches. If the quality is good then it makes sense, if these turn out to be bad then there is not much point.
From what I have read in "The winches have arrived" thread, the other people who bought and received their winches all seem to be happy so far. The proof will be in the pudding once we get out there and start using these in moments of need.

C'mon Cloggy, picks please, picks old chap.
Just curoius as to how and where you mounted the electrics.

Thinking of attacking my installation today. Well, planning it out anyways. :? Been a ittle delayed due to an un-expected expence of having to replace my battery, blowing the budjet for the second battery install.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

I have one of these winches, brought from a guy on trademe, mine works fine, you just need to make sure the solidnoids are mounted up in the engine bay, well away from the wet stuff, which mean longer wires etc.

I pulled my solidnoids out of the black box to see what they were like as the outer case was not sealed at all & inside they were a 1 piece water proof unit!!!
the little on/off switch however was not good so I bypassed that!

No worries Pete, more pics below.

First photo of the front of the Disco with the now modified grille in place. The winch is still hidden. Observant people will notice the grille is cut and has a new (red) latch.
Image

Push the latch down and the whole centre part of the grille hinges forwards to reveal the winch. Thought this was better than making a little trap door to get to the clutch. This way one can see the cable spooling onto the drum which would have been difficult otherwise.
Image

This also allowed me to fit the plug for the wired remote behind the grille and still make it easily accessible. The wired remote will more than likely only be used as a back-up when the wireless remote(s) either fail or have flat batteries or when precise control of the winch is required. There is a little (half second or so) delay in the wireless remotes.
Image

Image

Mounted the second battery on the passenger side of the vehicle in a spot obviously designed to be used for such a purpose. Just meant relocating the power steering reservoir and vacuum reservoir. To hook the two batteries in parallel I used some 750 amp jumper leads courtesy of Supercheap, and discarded the clamps (which now make handy quickclamps for holding stuff during welding or glueing).
Image

Image

I modified the standard winch solenoid so I can now use either the wired or wireless remotes without having to swap plugs around. Also removed the little power on/off switch mounted on the solenoid to a switch inside the vehicle where it is out of harms way (water and mud). The solenoid itself is mounted as close as possible to the winch but out of the direct splashing of mud or water. The solenoid itself is remarkable well sealed. I took it apart with the intention of sealing it but the chinese have beaten me to it. Every screw is fitted with rubber washers and a nice silicone like seal is used between the two solenoid halves. I was quite impressed to see this.
The top yellow cable is an addition which now runs to the wireless remote control box. The bottow yellow cable goes to the plug for the wired remote mounted behind the grille.
Image

The wireless remote control box is mounted high and dry further back in the engine compartment. I took apart this box and sealed every nook and cranny just in case.
Image

To finish off the installation I fitted some longer front springs which raise the front by some 35-40mm to counter the extra weight of the winch, the extra battery and the bumper which is yet to come.
The bumper may have to wait till I am back at work late January so I can get the steel and other materials cheaply.
Santa Claus brought me a tree-trunk protector strap. I then shouted myself a 6.5 tonne bow shackle and an 8 tonne snatch block, both purchased by mail order from the guys of 4wdbits.co.nz who advertise here on this forum. I can definitely recommend dealing with these guys. Placed my order the day before Christmas and received the goods yesterday morning 28 December. That is excellent service considering there are 2 public holidays in those 4 days from order to delivery.
Thanks guys :D

Holy BatDisco Cloggy  .... everyone will want one of those trap door thingys now  still room under that little door to mount some anti Nissan rockets or a maching gun or something

What you need next is a little hydralic ram or something so it opens itself on demand...and have it playing the landrover theme song or something when its doing it

Looking good, are you going to tuck that wire out of the way of in front of the radiator?

Cool pics and post there Cloggy, thanks.

Is this the wired remote you got with your winch? Image
It's much nicer than the one I was supplied. Mine has a selector switch with two push buttons. I much prefer the toggle switch setup of yours.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Sure is. Overall I am very pleased with the winch and the accessoires I got with it.

Don't know when we'll be in the mud but the winch will get a workout tomorrow pulling a tree stump out of the yard. It may or may not pull it out. But it will be a test of its strength and the mountings. I am hoping it is not going to be too easy so I can test the winch to stalling point. Best to try and test these things to capacity in a friendly environment before needing them in a real situation.

Hmmm, might email the supplier and see if I can do an exchange then. 8)
