Steering Linkages.

Post by kiwipete »

Has anyone modded their steering linkages on their Terrano?

Im sick of replacing Tie Rods, Ball joints and drag links etc so have been looking at the US sites and have come across some possible units to try from.

I do wonder about the suitability of the units from the US though becase they are LHD there, is it just a simple matter of flipping parts over? (draglink)

There is also some talk of some using the steering linkages from a Navara, but I have no idea of what year etc.

What are your opinions?

No, im not going to SAS the truck now, it is going to be too costly for me.

Don't waste your money  Cert rules don't allow welding on steering linkages... unless factory original  another nice double standard we have to work around

Might be able to work around it

I spoke to someone recently at a gathering here in Chch who has installed a dampner. He got the bracket from Nissan dealership, via japan.
I think it was something like $40.00 fom memory.

Did you do the replacements yourself, or did you take it in to get done?

Okies then, im very tempted to order one of these kits from the USA. They will make it for the RHD vehicles and it is only $75US shipping.
Thougt about the Stage 3 kit.
What do others feel/think about this?
Would it pass certification?
If not who would I be best to approach to make sure it would pass certification before ordering? (Chch area)

Hi Madterrano,
I have installed a steering damper on my T. On the inside of the left hand chassis rail are two threaded holes, just forward of the idler arm. The bracket bolts on to these. I ordered my bracket through Cockrams here in ChCh, so your local Nissan dealer should be able to get one too. The guy said it would only take a couple of weeks, Yeah right I thought, but indeed it did arrive within 2wks. Then he surprised me more, as it was only $50. Still too much for a short piece of steel. The damper came from Autolign, and it is a Monroe OEM replacement. Rancho also do a damper, but they bolt onto the right hand chassis rail with their own bracket, and you have to grind off the bracket on the draglink, and clamp the end of the damper to the arm.
It is well worth it to fit one!! Much better on bumpy, rocky terrain, etc. The front end feels much more stable.
Cheers

Hi Al,

Yeah, I did the same but havent put it on yet.

What size and pitch bolts are required on the chasis rail for the bracket?

Pete, go and talk to Wayne Martin at Vehicle Certification Services in Waller Tce - he will say yes or no based on the info, but if thats an aftermarket relay rod and its welded (looks like it is, but can't tell from the crappy pics on their site) then you won't get it passed because as Reece says above, there is no room in NZ current legislation for having welded steering components at all. You can't even get them crack tested, if its welded, it will not pass.

Can I interest you in a slightly used Hilux front axle? I have a spare :) Will solve your problems... :D

Hi Willy,
The bolts are M10, not sure of pitch, but pretty sure they were just standard and not the Metric fine.

Thanks for the input Steve, have been in touch with Wayne.

I have decided to go with a Navara draglink, places the TRE end on a horizontal plane instead of vertical as the Terrano is. Its then just a matter of getting the tierod sleeve re tapped to fit the navara's slightly larger dia ball joint thread, so there is a navara BJ one end and a Terrano BJ on the other.

If you want more details on installing a Steering Damper. Check out the NPORA forum. There is a good How to for both Ranch and OEM.
