Quick axle swap.... yeah right!!!

When the truck (109" S3 station wagon) got it's brakes sorted (4mths ago) they noted that a few of the hub bolts were stripped - well it wasn't the bolts it was the hub threads.

The problem was faily obvious to see - oil pissing out of the hubs on both sides - and after yesterdays run on some gravel roads the keen eyed will note a couple of bolts had actually fallen out (they were brand new bolts & locktighted in :D )

So I looked at options - the obvious one being drill out & re-tap the threads but that would mean the truck being off the road for a while & it's my daily drive so when a whole new rear diff came up on TradeMe I reckoned I was sorted. I picked it up for bugger all from where Rex works (cheers for the bargin) & collected it on our way back down from Kerikeri on Monday

It was brand-new ex-army stock & was complete including brake drums, shoes, & cylinders - in fact the only thing missing was wheel nuts 8) 8) 8). So I reckoned I'd get it swapped over today - I mean how difficult could it be :roll: :roll: :roll: :roll:

First problem was the first of the U-bolts I started on - it looks like a wheel has come off on the road sometime & the ends of the U-bolt was welded to the nuts :evil: So out with the angle ginder & ..........

At this point I realised it wasn't gonna be taking me to work tommorrow as I don't have new U-bolts :roll: :roll: :roll: but carried on anyway. After a fair amount of cursing I finally got the other bolts undone & dragged the old diff out.

I swapped the brakelines & diff breather over & then thought it may be a good idea to check the diff ratio - guess what new one is 3.54 & old one was 4.7 F**K Oh well best leave this one for now & start stripping down the POS rangie outside to get to the diff.

Oh well at least I got dirty today :wink: - just not with mud :oops:

Funnily enough the missus wouldn't let me inside 'til I'd stripped & hosed myself down :evil:

Shiat, I thought we discussed the diff ratio when you dropped in??!! If you need a rangie centre let me know......

Correct me if I'm wrong but the diff in the pics is a Salisbury - Heavy Duty as found under the back of 109s and 110s.

Rangie will not have this type at all if standard. Will have the type with a welded bowl and the centre removal bolts round on the prop-shaft side.

I ran a Salisbury back end on my Series 1 Trailler - bloody strong! I never busted it but I broke loads of front diffs!

should be able too bolt classic rangie/ early disco (3.54 - 10 spline) into series housing front end. So he will have high ratio diffs, but being its not a tuff truck shouldnt be any worries with crawl speeds. Niblik runs this in his mega hybrid POS farkin shitter.
Thought about running series diffheads in my rangie housings in the shorthened Disco chassis thats hiding at wopass's place, (was going too have zuk engine/gearbox/transfer so needed to lower driveline ratio. Was going backwards in strength but thats a complete nother thread...
Back on topic, Furgus is still the dumbarse here :mrgreen:

I got spare left and right hubs, stubs and drums etc here for a salisbury and spare axels and drive flanges for sale and i"m looking for a 4.7 ratio salisbury crown wheel and pinion
The rangie diffs will prob be 10 spline and your front 109 diff will prob be 24 spline

If you are thinking of fitting these 4.7 gears into your 3.54 geared Salisbury I have some bad news for you. It won't work. You will need a complete carrier, not just crownwheel and pinion. Carriers are different sizes.

I'm just swapping the front diff head from a 4.7 to a 3.5 to match the new rear :D :D :D

they are correct for a normal 109" Salisbury BUT mine has had a few extra leaves added to the rear spring packs so they didn't fit :(

So had some new ones made up & fitted them this afternoon - the rear prop sahft has also been vibrating like crazy so I also swapped a few bits around there to make a new one fit & we'll see how that goes (I suspect in the New Year I'll bew having a real new one made up). So just need to bleed the brakes, add the wheels & off we go - Oh & I gues I'd best swap that front diff before I pop it into 4wd too :roll:[/img]

Oh I don't know - Andrew Thomasens Tundra racing truck runs different ratio front and rear diffs to give better turn in..... :D :D

OK so here's apic of the new U-bolts in place & as you can see the brakes are bled ( :roll: )

So to the front diff swap - piece of piss I hear you say - well it should be ..... but it took me all day :oops: :oops: :oops:

There are 2 ways of pulling the halfshafts to get the diff head out - first undo the swivel housing, pull it to one side & the halfshaft pulls out of the diff ................. BUT the bolts were absolute #$@%'s to get to & shift - had to pull the shockie out the way but got there in the end

So on the other side I thought I'd try the other way - pull the bearings out & the stub-axel off & pull the whole halfshaft ( :?: ) out - like this

BUT .... some noddy had locktighted the bearing holding lock-nut in place or some such thing - anyway I couldn't f'n shift it even with the right socket & a BIG bar. So out with the air chisel & ........

Any way that was replaced & it's all back together again & fluis back in - just needs the whells back on & I'll take it for a test drive & see how the new diff ratio makes it drive :D :D :D :D

Is that shock upside down?? I know theres a eye and pin at each end but wont that shock cup crap??

Either way, good too see its progressing :wink:

Thinking about it you'r probably right - I noticed as I worked on it that it said "Isuzu" upside-down on the shockie - so I guess it's not standard :shock: :shock:
