steering damper

hi all,hope everyone had a good christmas.

have been thinking about fitting a steering damper to my pajero. Just wanted to know what would be involed in doing this and would it need to certed for wofs?

any info/help would be nice.

Does the Pajero already have one? if not, forget about it there will be very little benefit in doing so. If there is already one on it they are easy to replace. Just unbolt the old one and fit the new one. I replaced the old steering damper on my 70 series with an Old Man Emu and there was very little difference. Not that I could notice anyway.

no it doesnt have one at the mo,i thought steering dampers removed the freeplay and some of the shock from bumps and stuff.

ok then what are the pros and cons for fitting them?

Yeah that's what they are designed to do especially when you are running larger tyres. The coil over type steering damper also return your steering to center quicker as well. The reason I didn't notice much of a difference on mine is because it already had a factory one. I guess you will notice a difference on your vehicle if you fit one. They do work but i'm not sure how you retro-fit one. Good luck.

yeah thought so,just bit unsure what happens with the whole wof thing as of yet,seams simple enough to do make up braket and bolt to chassis on on side (not to sure what side yet) and the just clamp/bolt over steering rod,have got a oldish one sitting in shed (from dads land cruiser).

It won't be a WOF issue as it is only an addition not an alteration and as long as you don't have to cut or modify any of the factor steering mechanisim you will be fine.

i wouldnt cut steering stuff anyway,just gotta figure out where and how to mount it.

They mount to the chassis rail on the opposite side to the steering arm.

so mount to passerger side chassis rail and across to steering arm neer drivers side,any set sort of measurement i should do?

That will depend on the length of the damper. When your wheels are straight, the damper should be half way in. I would work out where half way of the damper is and use that as a guide then bold the brackets on at that length. Once fitted you can double check by turning wheels on both lock to make sure you have enough travel in the damper.
