prado locker into surf

Post by tristanp »

so i did a deal and ended up with a lj78 prado for not much cash if i helped swap out the factory locker into timotheous's surf, sounds easy enough. theres a fair bit of info on the net about it and it looked do-able

i thought id take a different approach

so out comes the factory locker and a sizeable section of the diff housing

and try get the same size chunk out of a non locked housing to replace it

Image
bolt the replacement part onto the standard diff head and offer the whole lot up into the hole, a small bit of trimming later and its ready to weld

a few tacks

then fully weld

and grind back gasket surfaces

a big slop of silicone and put the std diff in ready to go

then a simmilar story on the surf diff
in most of the writeups they said to pound the back of the housing to clear the bearing cap bolts so while a big chunk of the housing was out it left heaps of room to swing a big hammer

Image
use the section out of the prado, tack in the same way sa the last one

so im half way through dressing the diff housing.. will post more tomorow

in all the writeups on the net, they go on about grinding out a section on the housing for the ringgear, i forgot to do this, and the diff slipped right in.. i guess jap imported surfs dont need it?
