turbo light on surf
turbo light on surf
what does the red turbo light mean??? i take it its some sort of warning light. i recently put a snorkel on an noticed it abit when i first drove it after that. thought it might be something to do with the two little things on the airbox that have vacume hoses going to them (some sort of switches???). the light soon went away bt now it has started coming back on again at about 3000rpm. there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it. is ther a chance its coming on for no reason or is there something wrong?

Hi Pete
when any lite comes on in any vehical take notice. The first action you should take, is to find out what this lite is trying to tell you. This can done easily by down loading the fault codes that are stored in the surfs computor. In the engine bay there is a diagosic port. Bridge E1 and T1 termanials this will bring up a series of flashes on the dash panel next to the turbo lite, which must be counted then cross referenced to the fault code. The codes are available of the net somewhere, cant rember where, but some one will jump in with them or post them as a permanite reminder. When you get that far come back and progress to the next stage

when the light came on the first time it was gone within a minute, now its back im taking notice. does my non efi 2lt have a computer/diagnostic thingy? had a compresion and leakdown test the other day, they didnt say anything about the turbo (do they check it? they asked me on the phone if it had one...), could they have possibly put something back together wrong?
The orange turbo light (beside the green one) is there to tell you the turbo is overboosting - this is a bad thing, especially on one of these motors.
Get it checked by a reputable Diesel place, or by Miles Toyota (in chch) or toyota wherever you are.
I had this happen to mine years ago and it was a simple fix, they replaced the waste gate actuator from memory, which was sticking.
It could just as easily be a sensor fault tho... you won't know till its checked.

Looking at Petes avatar it would be a safe assumption we're talking about an early 3-door series-1 surf, non EFI T-Diesel...
Hence my using the old fasioned method of just knowing what that light means
Good luck with it, and for safety, drive it out of turbo range, ie: idle everywhere and don't go up hills
