Mounted snorkel on the Prado (not dial-up friendly)

Finally got to install my snorkel on the Prado. Airflow don't make one for the Prado, but for an HJ75, but I've been told it'll fit.The HJ75 has a longer nose, so the air box is a fair way further forward.

All parts laid out


Remove window washer bottle, side indicator, LC badge & air box.


Snorkel held adjacent - not quite right, need to cut.


Need hacksaw..check again, double check...cut.


still a bit too long, but we can live with that


Lay template on guard. Pattern uses the LC 70 guard as reference, so I had to mark the centre of the snorkel hole and get that to line up with the pattern. Fits nicely between the body folds.



Check the misalignment can be taken up with the flexi hose...yip


Tape over hole & drill. (aside: splashed out a whopping $12 on a snazzy hammer drill from M10 'cos my old one burnt out a while back. Also had to get a 76mm hole saw ~$50 from Topmaq)



Drill other holes....twice..bugger. Pattern wasn't quite aligned correctly.


Coat all bare metal surfaces with PA10 Primer.

Silicone all the holes on the airbox, except the big one I need.


put it all together...easier said than done. Difficult to get the hose on to the snorkel inside the guard, cant see, all by feel, not much snorkel to grab a hold of. Finally got it on and siliconed it all.


Do top snorkel bracket into A pillar. Drill and install plastic bungs, bend bracket to match pillar & snorkel (BFH)


Install air box


All done :) Just gonna seal around outside to stop rusting behind.


I did the suction test with hand over the top inlet, got a leak in the guard...more silicone needed I think.
I haven't installed a snorkel before, but Safari ones are cheaper to get installed...I think I see why now.

Not much to seal on with the snorkel by the look of it.
Are you using silicone? If so, IMO, I'd go buy sealonce or similar, as I have found silicone is a waste of time, and won't seal properly, peels off too easily.

nice work, a mate fitted one last month....what did you do with the indicator? just kept it wired up inside the engine bay?

I think you must have an indicator visible from 45° or something, which is why all cars have the side ones. I just left mine inside the guard at the mo, but I saw this on Trade Me a while back, so was thinking about doing the same. Took template of the hole. The existing cable reaches fine.

Thats where I put my indicator when I did my snorkel although I did have to extend the wires. Silicone does not stick to the type of plastic used in snorkels. See bit in BOLD below

I used an Airtec TJM Snorkel, part No. 011SAT0268N, it has this part No. 011MB00168N cast into the plastic.

I bought separately a 90� rubber elbow and having altered the inner guard like OB says and rotated the filter body anticlockwise slightly found it fitted fine. I made an adapter reducing the pipe size from the elbow to the plastic inlet. For this adapter I just used two pieces of large dia. radiator hose that fitted inside each other. The hose clamp clamping the elbow also clamps the two hoses onto the plastic inlet.

N.B. I found through testing that you need to have all of the plastic inlet tract from the filter housing to the engine side of the inner guard as part of the system. This device significately reduces the induction noise that you hear at your right ear!

Like all snorkels made for a slighlty different body, 70 series I think, the template does not work well.

To properly seal the system I used lureathane sealer not silicone. The snorkel is made from Polyethylene and the noise reduction plasticky bits are Polypropylene, niether of which like to be adhered to. I used a primer made by Sikaflex, Sika215/290 DC which is by the smell of it the glue used to weld/stick plastic pipe fittings together. (What the gluesniffers like) The Sika people reckoned this primer would allow the Lurathane sealer to adhere to the plastics.
With the primer the sealer does work, without it doesn't, yes I tried both! Will post some photos shortly.
