chewing the diesel

Post by gary_in_nz »

my 88 gq sucks through some diesel almost as bad as my landy, well mabey not that bad, but does use more than i would think it would.

its a standard GQ short wheel base, NON turbo 4.2 diesel, 5 speed manual, running standard size road tyres on it, 31's. I fill my tank and can't quite get 500 kms from it?? just wondering what everyone else experiances, and if there is anything to do to these that might help out a little.

I threw it on the weigh bridge at work today and it came in at a solid 2,300 kgs exactally with half tank of gas. I guess thats why they are the 'baby hippos'!!

Yeah mines been sucking through the diesel lately and has started smoking when the boots down. Think its the injectors so I'm going to sink some money into getting them sorted soon...ish.

There is a small filter on some injector pumps which need cleaning, under the banjo bolt.

yesterday i changed out the air cleaner and diesel filter. air cleaner was fairly bad and the diesel filter had this slimy gunk stuff in the bottom of it, i guess about a tea spoons worth, so shall see how far i can get now, it still blows a fair bit of smoke under load though.

First step is replacing air-filter, followed by reco'd injectors and fuel pump.

Mileage per tank depends on how hard you push it. GQ's have two tank sizes...65L and 95L. I get about 7-800kms per tank from mine with 95L tank.

A non turbo will often blow some smoke under load. You can get the injection timing checked to minimize it and even get the pump turned down a little to stop it if you're worried.

Excessive black smoke is often a sign of not enough air, that's why the aircleaner is one of the first (and easiest) things to check.
The best fix for black smoke is to fit a turbo. :D

Clogged fuel filters will usually hurt power and performance rather than producing black smoke.

I got my Isuzu injectors redone recently after at least 100,000km of abuse (incl engine rebuild due to dust). The injector guy said one was okay, two were bad and one really bad.
The new injector tips made no noticable difference to power or economy, but did help starting.

How much would you be looking at to get the timing sorted in a TD42 do you know?

Sorry, no idea. Grab the Chch yellow pages and call around. Plenty of diesel tuning specialists there.

Im the same as GQtrol,, bout 750-800 out of a tank..95l tank with a modded truck. My Saf never used to smoke much at all until Rick at 4wd Acc did a service for me and found the factory setting on the injector pump was very low.He tweaked and presto i've got a noticable power increase but also a bit of smoke under load..Good with the bad 8)
