We are holidaying in katikati from the 9th to the 16th and would love to have a sniff up Thopmsons Track while in the area. Problem is the Discovery is still bog standard - no funds= no mods yet!
I am an experianced off road driver but never would attempt this track alone (with out a winch anyway)
Any one with a winch local who would like some company on a day out up the track?
its dry up there at the moment , rain this week maybe any rain up there you will need good muds and another truck to help.the ruts are long and deep ,hopefuly someone from closer can guide you up donen't twice so far need a break from the place
Yeah, I have been doing some research and it might be a bit too tough for the shiny family wagon. Don't really need the aggro of recovering and fixing it when I should be relaxing with the family........

Yeah from what I have read it seems easier that way but we are staying in Katikati so it would make sense start that end if possible.

The Katikati side is blocked by an impassable slip - needs weeks with a digger to fix

Thanks for the info!! Looks like if we do do it we will have a bit of a road trip first then to get to the Te Aroha end.
Hey Coxey ,When you met the guys on the 2nd had they managed to get right through or had they gone as far as the slip and turned around,Just checking as were looking at coming down in the next week or so to ckeck out the slip.from the Katikati side once your through the bomb site how far from that is the slip anyone know? ...Cheers
hi steve the slip is in the place where you were winching on the first you tube vid you put up far as i know , theguys i met on the 2nd came in the tearoha suide like us,Im on holi at waihi beach next week and want to drive the kaikati side as far as i can sometime that week,
They must of had some major problems then as from the summit Te Aroha side its wasn't to bad getting down to the slip, It got really interesting from there on The main problem we had was Sun strike kept loosing the track If we come down on the weekend and come in from Katikati ill let you know its not to bad up to the bomb site but you might want to have a rethink from there on I might just go in from Te Aroha and go down to the slip for a gander as the general consensious is theres no way through and coming from the other side you've got the bomb site twice plus all the other crap in between..Steve
