Thompsons Track Next Week

Post by muddymatt »

Hi all,

We are holidaying in katikati from the 9th to the 16th and would love to have a sniff up Thopmsons Track while in the area. Problem is the Discovery is still bog standard - no funds= no mods yet!
I am an experianced off road driver but never would attempt this track alone (with out a winch anyway)
Any one with a winch local who would like some company on a day out up the track?

Cheers muddymatt :D

Yeah, I have been doing some research and it might be a bit too tough for the shiny family wagon. Don't really need the aggro of recovering and fixing it when I should be relaxing with the family........

Yeah from what I have read it seems easier that way but we are staying in Katikati so it would make sense start that end if possible.

The Katikati side is blocked by an impassable slip - needs weeks with a digger to fix

Thanks for the info!! Looks like if we do do it we will have a bit of a road trip first then to get to the Te Aroha end.

Cheers

They must of had some major problems then as from the summit Te Aroha side its wasn't to bad getting down to the slip, It got really interesting from there on The main problem we had was Sun strike kept loosing the track If we come down on the weekend and come in from Katikati ill let you know its not to bad up to the bomb site but you might want to have a rethink from there on I might just go in from Te Aroha and go down to the slip for a gander as the general consensious is theres no way through and coming from the other side you've got the bomb site twice plus all the other crap in between..Steve
