BEER!!

This will help, but if your going solo don't forget the sign
"Free Beer if you get me out..."

If this is a first time go with a crowd :D playing follow the leader can be a lot of fun, and it gives you someone else to drink beer with

As for things you need hmmm diff lockers, roll cage, bigger engine... pto/hyd winch, bigger tires   start with a recovery hook for the front and if you don't have a beefy rear tow bar, one for the back as well... don't trust those sheetmetal towing eyes, they are designed to hold the truck on a boat not pull it from a bog!

As for the info on tracks etc There is a south island 4WD guide, it'll be pretty tame, if my N' Island guide is anything to go on, I think it might have been written by Sam Parker anyone else know

Cheers Reece

 i hate to sound like a natzi but...

if you drink and drive your a fkn moron...do the drinking when youve finished driving, its much safer for everybody.and you wont spill your beer

99% of injurys/fatalities caused by drunk drivers are inocent people...

back to the subject tho

as for what to get first...

A TOYOTA !

Hooks or shackles all round
Some great tyres, spend the bucks it's well worth it.
A winch.
A Snorkel... and on goes the list.
Generally a visa or three seems to work :)

The most important thing, have fun and go out with people who do it, not talk about it!

O and yes Beer, whilst we on the subject I see your from blue and gold country, speights land... any chance of a tanker full of it coming up this way at all? I'm not cready I'll share it around, promise.

you are right you do sound like a Nancie .... please check previous posts I didnt suggest the man or anyone should drink and drive, pull over, then have a nice cup of earl grey and scones 8) opps sorry wrong thread. but owning a 4wd can sometimes drive a person to drink so Im sugesting to cut a few corners by going straight to the beer ......... and if that fails Pete will need a drink after his first repairs :) :) Gotta go my Earl Greys getting warm the ice is melting

First off I'd look at yer tyres. Best Mod I made to my suzuki and hilux.

then get rated tow points fitted (hook or eye which ever suits) to a solid part of the chassis so it wont break or pull off.

Get a decent snatch strap (maybe two just incase).

A membership to the local club or some like minded individuals to have some fun with and learn as you go.

Some training would be good here also if you feel so inclined.

A track guide book maybe.

Finally a good attitude towards the others you will meet and the environment you travel in.

That about it for starters, beauty about this is you can be on a budget and still get out and have a great time. Just try to travel with mates for that security and also someone to share stories with (a good mate wont mind if you over embelish your achevements etc.)

 well there we go, back to the topic at hand

the first thing i would get is(if you havent allready) is a bunch of good mates who have 4x4's as well, that way you never go out 4x4ing by your self, which is just not advised. with at least one other person you are twice as likely to get home in one piece and have good stories to tell afterward.

after that i would go for the ones previously mentioned,

tow hooks(most 4x4's have these standard)

good tyres that will do what you want them to do:ie; mud tyres if your in the mud, sand tyres if your into sand,AT's if you have no idea but want to go have fun.

winch.... i cant say how much i love my winch....winches are the be all and end all of a 4x4,if your tyres let you down, the winch gets you out.love it.

thats about all from me, my 2c only gets me so far,
