Using air con pump as compressor

Post by Danster55 »

Hey guys,

I have a '92 3 door Escudo, has anyone done a conversion to their air con so it can be used as a pump for tyres etc. If so what are some of the pit falls? and how would you have done it differently?

Just done it to my Range Rover only problem is lubrication.
Most a/c pumps rely on the a/c gas to lubricate them but there are some with there own oil tank, so every now and then i put a few drops of oil in.

Do a search on here for "endless air" or "Air con pump". There was a couple of good threads about 6 months ago.

James,

I live in Martinborough, but my brother lives in Naenae, he has a 5 door and 3 door and i think he wants to do the same, so maybe we could organise something for both of us to come round?
Nearer the end of the month though, just sold my house and there shit loads to do, you know how it is:)

another option is to pick up a decent compressor from ie supercheap and hardwire/mount it under your bonnet so you still have aircon....

I believe the compresor of choice for this application is York (and not Sanden). Most preferred are the ones on old Volvos. Some of the York models have internal oil tank (small, but effective). Here are a couple of links to write-ups on the net (they are Jeep related, but a compressor is a compressor).

Cheap compressors are shit and even worse when there covered in mud and water.....you don't need aircon in New Zealand it's not 30 degrees in the winter and 50 degrees in the summer. The standard zuki air con pumps are fine as long as you keep em oiled and if you forget and it seizes well its still a suzuki so parts are cheap  :D

Snippets from an aussie site, might help you.

The way to go is not to use the modern a/c compressors , but a old York a/c compressor of something like a XE falcon as they are a piston type with a seperate oil sump and no lube problems.

this is a good one to use its of a old XE V8 falcon
look for a plug on the side which is where you fill the sump with oil.
It should be a twin cylinder design with a old fashion cranksharft.
You will find this design fairly large........but is easy to replace.
The Nippon Denso unit I used is smaller but harder to find at the wreakers .
The Nippon Denso unit works the same way.
The York unit tends to have a flatish cylinder head cover with bolts around the edge and the ports coming from the centre of the head.
The bottom of the unit from memory is a pressed metal plate ( the sump )

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.
