newbie another rover owner

Post by dctecho »

hello there,
I am another new member,I have a 1978 rangie hybrid project, This is quite a common project in the uk which involves cutting and shortening the chassis to 88inches and fitting a short wheelbase series 3 body.I have researched this conversion for the past year and now started to attack the project, will post some pics shortly.I was just wondering if anyone knows of any of these conversions being done in nz I would be keen to contact any owners.
I am also at the stage now where I need to involve a certifier, can anyone out there recomend someone in auckland.
Also if anyone else is considering this conversion I have hundreds of photos on cd and pages of info about successful projects from the uk i can send you.

cheers for now

Sounds good. Will definetly be keen on seeing info and photos you have on it. My father has that on his wishlist of things to do...... We had a guy in our club who got as far as cutting and welding the chassis up (another member had his welding ticket) but as he got up to the stage of attaching body to chassis he moved to Aussie for work. Im not sure what happened to the vehicle

On the certifier side of things, theres a guy who's name has completely slipped my memory, Ive got his details at work so can let you know tomorrow. He is an ex 4 wheeler and I know a lot of people who use and recommend him. Very helpful and friendly.

Welcome to the forum

cheers

shall I??????? sometimes the temptation is soooo great its hard to resist. why go thru all this when there is.......... arrrr forget it Go for it cloth cappers!!!!
(Serious mode). When the projects completed, will it do the job that you expect from it and justify the money spent and will the beast out preform all others?Although I dont want to discourge anyone from a project I have and are still learning from my own mistakes. I found out its more reliable to buy a vehicle thats close to those dimentions then add personal touchs so I could spend more time enjoying driving the things. (S. mode off)
If you cut it down where would you put the wicker picnic basket with the scones and Earl GreyTea? :P

 I've just worked it out, who you sound like DJ .... my dad!!
"Its a waste of time.... if you'd just save the money your wasting on the (insert project here), you'd have some twice as flash bla bla bla"

Thats not the point, its making a vision come true, it's learning something new (how to do it) it's the thrill when it goes together right :? and if dose it's the interest it creates from others when they see it :P .... and dose it do the job  maybee, but if it don't  there's a good reason to change it.. just a bit...

There was something a long time ago that my dad told me (and I listened to), When I first picked up his welder to build something he told me "If you enjoy building it, you'll enjoy using it alot more...."

Next time your on a club trip and your wagon clears the bog, and the guy behind in an old series II that he's rebuilt clears the same bog.... who's got the bigger grin??

Cheers Dad opps I mean DJ

I don't think rally cars are meant to get stuck  Built for speed and bumps only - not bogs and rivers. So the chances of you seeing one Jungle are pretty slim unless it was airlifted into one of those 3 metre deep swamps you have up there in Rotorua 8O

Hi
If you kids are looking at those Rover pics again you will go blind and I"m stopping your allowance NOW. OK!!
Right now, go to your rooms and read those Toyota manauls and remember I am doing this for your own good. You will thank me one day just when one of those Rangi Overs breaks down you will be saying "why didnt I listen now I'm broke, got a yard full of broken down modified Pommie dogs, dead patches on the lawn Corgies wanting to go for a drive and still havn't been able to out 4wding. But on the bright side maybe that DJ will let me ride inside of his Toyota this time and maybe he will let me wear my cloth cap" ( Yea right)
Now turn off the light and go to sleep. Remember no nightmares! just dont think of those Range Rovers

good nite children

Now you are talking, but Im puzzled what is "the sleaves" are you refering to brake wheel cylinders, master cylinders or engine sleeves? You sound confused, but thats understanderble given your choise of transport and your reference to "never neverland, thats a slight on Micheal Jackson and thats what the rest of NZ calls Auckland. There is other people past the Bombay Hills you should know this because we are paying for a motorway that we dont/cant use thats jamed up, cause of broken down Rangis.Of course Toyota (some) have beam axles in the front that ride ruff on the tar seal, they are built for off road thats where real 4wding is as I said before. Not for across town trips to vist the hair dresser or pick up the Corgies. (thats if they make it that far) I will agree, different vehicles are built for different applications, just that Range Overs are just not up to the fun that we serious drivers expect of a modern 4wd.
Now your reference to drivers outside of Auckland,( hicks in never never land) it was ok to attack me but now you have desided to attack everyone else south of the Bombays, you will be very lonely with no where to go 4wding what with most of your areas being threatened with closure. :P Yes I can show you a desent Toyoya (compaired to a Rangi ) Any one of them!!!!  Be nice to us 8)
cheers DJ

PS there is decent people in Auckland just they dont drive rangis and reconise there is life outside a Leyland repair manual.   [/quote]

thank you rex for that phone number I will get in touch with the certifier next week,I will sort threw all the info I have on hybrid projects and put it all on a cd so i'll let you know when its done.
As for the input from the non rover owner,As I said I have spent considerble time researching this project and if I didn't think the end result
would do what I want I wouldn't be building it,I have seen many of these conversions done and they are very capable off road vehicles. As for the cost ,one range rover chassis with all running gear $1500 one series 3 body complete $450 and about 20 hours of welding to end with a vehicle of the same specs as defender 90 (but with better entry and departure angles) for a fraction of the price, cant go wrong. And they look so much better than those leaf riding drum braking god forsaking toyotas.

Anyway must go,gotta take the scones outta the oven to have with me earl grey tea and let the corgi's out to piss on the neighbors hilux.
