Alternator Woes

Post by curly12 »

Having a senior moment today.
My toymota hilux has been having issues with the alternator. Not charging and now not showing any alternator dash light's. Last week, before Rallywoods Working Bee, I put in one of the batteries from the Nissan. In the morning it was flat as a pancake, would not even show dash lights but would show a glow in the headlight bulb, when they were turned on.
Realise it will be full of mud etc and was planning to take it out and recondition this evening
Now for my senior moment.
I just warmed up the hilux for about ten minutes and moved it around to work on it. However after 10minutes idling the alternator is to hot to touch. Is that normal?? While it may be trying to work hard to charge i don't ever recall them getting to hot to touch. So I put the lazer temp reader on the outside of it and it recorded it as 140c.
Just concerned about why it is so hot.
You thoughts please.............

Nope, thats abnormal... I would say its fried, and since the battery is directly connected to the alternator that would probably explain the flat as well.

Time for a new one methinks :)
