Trials Rules Clarification

Post by De-Ranged »

Gidday for those that have been following the rules issue I stunbled accross

A class rules stand as follows for clearancing your tires
"You may cut the gaurd, but not remove any material"
In other words you can cut the gards but only to allow you to fold the pieces up out of the way
This is offical, well till a new Scrutineer takes over then it will depend on there interpretation of the rules

my rule book states for a and b
"wheel cavity interpreted as inner guard, outer guard, inner front paneland firewall may be cut, enlarged, flared or re-inforced or raised to the lower edge of the original bonnet height for tyre clearance only provided no sharp edges are left that can cause injury"

No mention of retaining any origanal metal???

And that is the problem,

Unfortunatly at the end of the day it comes down to the scrutineers interpritation of the rules and what they enforce and I have been told by them they are enforcing this... by them

My personal view is the rules need to be cleaned up

my rule book says the same as tpft does so not to confusing , on a lada you should only need to trim an inch or 2off the frront guard for 31s.

Okay guys you are correct in the wording of the rule. However the scrutineers have deemed that the rule dos not say that you can remove any metal, so yo cant. The rules are very specific in the writing the first section states must have, the next section states may have, then must not. This rule is then in a further section relatingf to body, reading the rule the scrutinners and competitions committee have deemed the intent to be no removal. as stated the rule allows cutting raising reinforcing etc. If competitiors wish to have a rule change then it would need to be remitted at an agm. Class rules can only be altered by rtemit every 3 years which will not be until 2010, so based upon that and the ruling of the past 2 years this cannot be changed even by a srcutinner until 2010.

So taking that to an extreme what is to stop you cutting the guards almost completely away but leaving them attached by a small sliver and riveting this rolled up peice of tin into the engine bay and riveting it to the new guard. You havent removed it, it is still attached and it has only been cut.

I guess the rules lawyers would have a feild day with that one. I guess the idea is to stay within the "spirit" of the rules and checking with the scrutineers as to what is and isnt acceptable would be best (although sometimes anoying as they will vary), or check with the cheif scrutineer and get his rulling in writing.

Dan, may bend you ear (or rather you keyboard) at some stage soon about setting up a wagon for A class also.

So long as it has only been for tyre clearance, and still has mudguards that are equal to in weight or heavier and are less expensive because original panels can not be obtained nothing at all to stop you doing that. No problem about getting in touch with me email or cellular 027 227 3705 dosnt matter or a thread on here in case anyone else wants to follow it

Do you guys competing in trials know the weight of your original panels? I mean reading from above, its okay if they are equal to "in weight" or heavier and are less expensive. Less expensive is okay, because just about anything would be less expensive than originals. I am just curious because I have no idea how much my gaurds weigh. I must say, other than watching and marshalling a couple of events, I have no other involvement in trials at this stage.

Yes I weigh everthing, I know what my tyres and rims, bullbar, tailgate, doors, etc all weigh, but you do need to read the entire rule it can become quite invovled, its not just saying this is heavier, you as the competitor have to be able to prove it, if it is made from a material that was not used in assembly it must conform to the original panel design and shape, and so the rule goes on

I know what my entire TJ weighs and the mods I have done to it (its easier as most manufacturer would tell you the weight of their product like bumpers). But going to your extreme of weighing everything separately I have only seen in high speed motorsports where weight means slower speed. Would you consider your attitude to be the norm in this sport or something special. Now I am really curious. I don't want to hijack the thread, but if I decide to build a trials truck would I have to strip every part and weigh it first and then put it back together? Thanks.

My background is 20 odd years of motor racing and speedway, so I'm not the norm. Weight is really only an issue when you are getting to close the max for the size of your rollcage in this sport and/or you are low on horsepower eg If i add or change this on the vehicel I can remove that to keep the same weight
