Oil guzzling 2LT!

Post by Davelux »

Hi all would any one know why a diesel 2LT engine would blow lotsa smoke and DRINK oil? I'm not kidding it starts fine, but is smokey and goes from reading max on dipstick to 3/4 full after driving to work, approx 20k. I only just bought it recently, have adjusted the valve clearances (they were real noisey). It also over boosts at about, 2500 rpm. I need to change all the air hoses though coz they have small holes. Anyway any ideas on the oil would be sweet. Cheers

I'd suspect the turbo before anything else. Check the crossover pipe that goes from compressor outlet to manifold, and the exhaust downpipe for oil. Substantial amounts of oil in these places probably mean your turbo seals are shagged. A light film of oil in your crossover tube could just be engine blowby as I understand the crankcase is vented into the air intake before the turbo on the 2LT. To rule this out remove and clean crossover pipe and re-route the crankcase vent straight to atmosphere, then drive for a bit. If the crossover pipe fills up with oil again then it's the turbo.

He says the air hose's are cracked/holed.

Which hoses are these Dave?? Do you mean the flexi hose that comes out of the top of the air box??

If thats the case, and there aren't many other air hoses on a 2LT, i would say its been sucking dirty air into the engine, the dirt in the air has buggered the piston rings and the oil is entering the combustion chambers through the worn out rings. That would present itself as high oil consumption and smoke.

By pulling the crank case breather off, you will also see huge amounts of blowby if the rings are buggered.

i seen one doing the same thing we put a piece of hose from the engine breather to a old milk bottle and this ones turbo was no good, but with it over boosting theres a good chance it might be the rings

Thanks for info so far guys I will look into all that. I changed the air intake hose from air box (it had one small hole) today, and am going to check the turbo for signs as you've suggested. I have another turbo which was working fine on the engine it came off would it be an idea to put this on and see if there's a difference?

When I first bought the truck it hadn't been running for a year or so. I reset the tappets to factory as they were real noisey and changed the fuel filter and put injector cleaner in it. The breather hose from rocker cover (is this the one you were meaning from crank case?) was venting to air and the air intake plastic pipe where it plugs into (between air box and turbo) was plugged.

Well thanks again I''l get into it!
