I don't know much about Toyota diesels, but reading on here it seems your question is kind of like somebody who is about to commit suicide and wants to know: do I shoot myself or hang myself?

so the 2.8 has an after market turbo kit on it? or just the 2lt stuff bolted on? i don't think they are that bad but bolting a turbo onto an engine that was not designed to have one will always reduce engine life.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

the 2.4 was the only L-series engine to come in turbo, 2.8 and 3.0 are non turbo but some had electronic injection

the 3 litre turb would be the 1KZTE, a completely diffrent engine

I have the 3 litre "5L" in my lux but unless ya find the right price, can cost ya a bit
Got a Daihatsu Something, hasn't got a Daihatsu engine.... or diffs.... and it doesn't have windows.... or doors.... but its got tyres.... :)

I think you're right. But there are a lot of 2.8's out there with the 2.4 turbos bolted on. It looks factory enough to fool most people.

just to add, they didn't come out with the 5L motor (3 litre atmo). the hilux did but the surf went to the 1KZT.

one thing to check is what version of the 2LT motor it has. especially if its a 2.8 conversion as the later 2lt-e to 2.8 conversions are a little tricky to get right so there are a few dodgy ones around.
