Engine replacement for 89 surf with 87 engine

Post by bigandrew »

I recently purchased an 89 surf, previous had 2.4L D engine ( i think), but was definitly electronic. The engine i got for it to replace the engine was a 2.4L D 87 mechanical engine. Im now having trouble with the wiring etc, does any one know any way of wiring it on to the newer wiring loom with out effecting the wiring loom? maybe via seperate relay and circuits but will that effect the rest of the electrics because the ecu wont know the motor is running?

PLZ Help im outa my depth!

From what I know they have different ECU's, hence a different loom, do you have the one for the replacement engine?

yes i did make sure i got the loom, no ecu was there. Mean time ive spoken to several motor importers, and they have assured me that i shouldnt have any problems using the current loom/ecu... as long as a get a wiring diagram for the 89 surf and 87 surf and wire it in properly. appartenly that you can make an electrical engine mechanical but not mechanical to electrical. (Hope they are right!)

Does anyone know where i could get the wiring diagrams?

ECU? The early motor has no ECU. It has a glow plug timer which is inside the passenger kick panel, and they are different between the ECU and older non-ECU motors so you need to change that - as far as wiring goes, its a probably going to be a mess - the wiring will probably be covered in oil and brittle from heat and years soaking in diesel and oil and if you're out of your depth can I recommend an auto sparky? Or alternatively Mike (SupraSurf) is an engine wiring whizzo and has done one of these ECU to non-ECU conversions from memory... for a suitable financial reimbursement I'm sure he would have a look for you.
