Certification
Certification
I dont know if this has been asked on here before, but do I ned to have 33" tyres certified on my truck if I replace the 31" tyres that are already on it?
It is going in or certification on thursday for the body lift & I have tried a mates 33" tyres on it, but there is some minimal rubbing at full lock and sharp conering with the big plastic flares on. No it is not a simple case of rmoving the flares either.
I was just asking as I only have the 33" tyres for certification as I will be replacing the 31's by the end of the year.

Re: Certification
you need to certify tyres if they are + or - 5% of the factory size tyre that the vehicle came out with, I think that usually gives you an inch either way before you need to certify

Re: Certification
If you adjust the steering stops to prevent the rub you should be sweet. Probably a 14mm bolt and locknut. Easy as to adjust for cert and then adjust back afterwards (at least until you get your own set of 33's) Factory tyres were probably only a 29"? so would pay to get the tyres certed, wont cost you any more and nice peace of mind.

Re: Certification
Just a thought with the tyres Pete and the math might not actually work out, if you try and get your tyres certed as 32" the + or - 5% might let you legally alternate between 31 and 33 inch tyres on your truck to give you a bit of tyre size flexibility.

If you are put 33's on later it will need re-certing..

Are tyre sizes certifed? On the cert tag the only wheel spec is rim size i.e 15x8. Like wise when bead locks are certified there doesn't appear to be any identification of weather it is mechanical or internal/air. Also if tyres are certified, If I run a different tyre than what I got a cert with do I need to re cert? A 35" Kumho is inches smaller than a 35" Simex.
Just my thoughts.

Its on the paperwork that goes to LTSA, WOF types have access to that. In an accident I'm sure the police and your insurance company would.
Stupid thing is it's the tyre size as printed on the tyre/advertised by the manufacturer...

Re: Certification
Thanks chaps, I have had a wee chat to the certifier and he is happy that there is a little rubbing at full lock, sweet me thinks.
He realises that its just for the certification and they are comming off straight away.

The problem you'll have now is you'll be certified as 33" and you'll be running 31" which is outside of the 5% threshold in size your allowed so technicaly there goes the insurance and stuff again

Re: Certification
Thats my attitude to Pete
It only becomes a real problem if the uncertified bits are a reason or part reason for any accident or claim as far as i know. But then i don't know much

Re: Certification
yea i just insured my other car and was talking to them about it and my truck..ya could drive around insured with no rego an no wof and have a crash and youll be covered ASLONG as it was to a warrentable condition itd be fine and theyd pay out. e.g if ya run up the bum of a car because you werent watchn what was happening but your brakes were fine then theyd pay out, however if you run up the bum of a car because your brakes were dodge then your up the creek. so that was good to know seeing as my other car has no rego or wof until i can get the bloody thing going..
if you were running around on some highway terrains instead of the big muds an something happened i would hope theyd pay out!!

The whole reason for the 5% rule is for speedo accuracy. Going to smaller tyres is not a safety concern and your insurance company would have a hard job declining a claim because of that.
Re: Certification
Tis all certed, just had to widen the front flares 25mm and re-attach the sway bars. Certed for 15x8 rims too.
Now I need to look for some sway to disconnect these sway bars for off roading, the rears will be ok ish, but the fronts are another story!
Photos to follow later tonight for further advice from the experts.
Computer case will be re-attached at a later stage, being made removable for WOF time's.
(rant on)Even showed the WOF man that according to the LVV web site that the PC was not in the "A" zone, and he said he woud still fail it, because he has not been officialy told it is ok. What a load of garbage I thought. Wouldnt even allow it if he looked at the site himself and diddnt like it when I said he should have a look there sometime. I just do not understand how they can fail WOF's when they themselves are not up with the play?(rant off)

No questions were asked re the speedo, it was exactaly 6kmh out going by the GPS unit, but I had that turned off when it was in for certing.

Certifier said swaybars had to be on and connected for road use, certing is for road use only.

Re: Certification
Funny how different certifiers have there own interpretaion.
When I took mine he said you should have flares on but that was upto the warrent guys to knock it back not him.
I took my sway bars off the mounts are still there and he made no mention of it .
