Internal brake and synthetic rope is only an issue when you are using the winch to roll yourself down a hill (in reverse) i.e. you are using the brake to slow your descend while lowering yourself or holding yourself. Winching in normal (forward) direction will not heat up the drum (with the brake inside), so running a synthetic rope is not a problem. Besides not all low mounts winches have internal brakes (eg. Superwinch EPI 9.0 does not).

Most of the new model of winch are fine with synthetic. ie All the Come-Up, Superwinch EP9 (a Come-Up copy), most of the 9500lb winchs (reputable brands) are good as well. The brakes in these winch are different to the old type that generated heat.

The factory nissan winch,Warn M8000 have the brake(one way clutch)in the middle of the drum correct?

This holds the vehicle when say winching up a hill and you stop for some reason,it holds the vehicle(stops winch from unspooling)correct?

Cheers Shane

Add synthetic rope to the every growing list :D

Yeah it is in the drum and therefore the M8000 is no good for sythentic long term. I've heard people using it without issues but the heat i going to effect the life of the rope.

I know it's bit late now but saw this posted on Outerlimits regarding the new CCDA (aussie) rules for their trophy class (which I suppose is an equivalent of what I presume is trying to be achieved with a clubmans class).

Specs for NEW Production Class include:

No Turbo or Super Charged Petrol
No Intercooled Diesel
Engine must be of same make & model as vehicle (eg no 4.5 or 4.8 in GQ)\
Can run aftermarket engine mgt system
No 24v winch
Single Shocks
Body must retain origional shape (no ute conversions)
Origional wheelbase to be retained
35.5" x 13.5" max tyre size (must fit through gauge 901mm x 343mm)
No replacement guards or bonnet
Must run synthetic rope
Can run laminated diff & upgraded CV & Axels

Full topic can be read here... http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/phpBB2/vi ... sc&start=0

It was also mentioned that a 4 point cage would required for the Vic Winch event (their entry level comp) and a 6 point cage required for the Outback challenge, Cliffhanger, Alpine challenge and all the rounds of the Engel series.

Their rules seem like a good balance, allowing for someone with a fairly standard truck with 35's (which is pretty much the standard these days) to have a go, but not sacrificing any of the safety requirements (roll cage, harnesses, helmets, synthetic rope).

Anyway, that was just an FYI post. I'm looking forward to see what you guys down south came up with when your rules are released. Good on you guys for getting together to grow the sport - the future just keeps looking brighter for Winch Challenge in NZ.

In other more exciting news... Hot of the press, a major 4 day winch challenge event is planned for october 08.

Initial press release can be read here... http://www.4x4challenges.org.nz/news/48

As I understand it the organisers are pretty keen to get some teams up from the south but I'm sure they'll chime in later on and let us know all the finer details. It'd be great to see you guys racing up here in an epic north vs. south battle.

I'll be posting any info on the 4x4 challenges web site as it comes through to me, so stay tuned.

the first one is only 4 or so weeks away in southland, so if things need to be changed, roll cages certed, that sort of thing, that might be pushing it a bit close
