thats probably an ok price but I did manage to buy that model new on TM last year for $235 from a commercial trader called phquip in christchurch

That is probably about the price you are going to have to spend, but it is a good unit, and nice and compact for a dash-mount.
Do a search on trademe under Uniden and UHF, there a few good dealers in this gear, and 'PHQUIP' is definitely one of them. Another is 'ALABMAN' up north who I got my PRS from.
Probably the most important decision is the antenna to go with it. Dont skimp and mount it well. It makes a huge difference to the performance. Even the best unit with a cruddy antenna setup will be outperformed by a cheap and nasty el-cheapo unit with a great installation.
