De-Ranged Project "Mutant"

Post by De-Ranged »

Heres the latest bit of fun to hit the shed 8) client truck so it should progress a bit faster than mine
Image
a gen 1 surf cab.. stripped of all the crap you don't need
Image
a gen 2 hilux double cab chassi  soon to be butchered 8)
the rest includes a 2.8 supra motor, a set of 94 hilux solid axles

The intent is a bit against the trend  Stephen wanted a capable hilux club truck on 35"s... that was all good till he started talking to me and a freind of mine who happens to be a trails class leader  after sowing the seads of interest he was taken out for a play in my mates trails truck .... the build is now getting a trials "tweek" basicly a "junk yard build" (IFS rear springs up front, XD coon springs rear, 2.8 supra motor etc) but set it up to sit as low as possible for a good CoG and resumble travel and as light as possible and the wheel base will be shorted.... there are a few compromises the odd bit of extra bracing to make certain things last but that will be limited
As Stephen wants to be as active as possible in this he's doing all the grunt work... grinding cutting etc, so the speed is being set by him 8) and I get to do the fun bits

Starting from the ground up with the rear axle
Rear axle was swopped for an IFS axle, Filler was relocated and the pinion was rotated up a bit to help out with the shorter wheel base... the usual shave done with 10mm plate and a crown gard welded on. Then after a bit of talking he decided the axle need a bit of bracing ..... as hilux axles tend to bend just on the flat where the axle tube starts to flair for the diff head, a brace was added there, after talking to a few of the trails boys he decided it need a bit of bracing out where the bearing mounts weld to the axle tubes as well
Image
I've also machined the axle flanges to take a disk conversion and installed a Lockrite....
After alot of talk 4.8 diffs were decided on along with a set of rock crawler gears from SNR (still to come) might have something to do with the fact there is 2 rock crawlers sitting in the shed at the moment tho
Oh and new bearings thrown on as well

We're now working on the front axle.... most of the bracing has been cut and its just the slow process of welding, weld an inch drink some piss talk a bit weld another inch   nice en slow to control the heat and avoid warpage
Image

While thats happening I've started to sort the front suspension.... (I'm getting old, theres only so much drinking I can handle   ) part of the deal with trying to keep this low I'm moving the supension up a bit  the front X-member is getting replaced with a custom unit and the shackle mounts well.....
Image
theres a whole lot more about to happen here yet but this is the start

Anyway more to come
Cheers Reece

Is he doing the fiddle brake thing? and why didn't ya talk him into hydraulic suspension so any ride hide and forced articulation can be had :?:

Seriously though dude, looks good. :D
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

  client trucks arn't an issue its mine that I drag out and mainly becouse I keep working out how to build em better  we won't mention the Lemon

As for fiddles.. thats a bit up in the air at the moment, he can't make his mind up on fiddles or a slippery for the front decision time is coming soon  as the front axle is to go together soon

The suspension is simple becouse he's on a budget, and he's seen mudda's truck and that thing can flex!!

Oh and I will have one running soon   my $1000 lada  wahoo!!

howdy
yep tickers going good now ( I hope.. one fright is one too many ) Didn't sell Orange.... its part of the fleet and wont leave home .. goes too well. I put Orange on Trash me and a dick ( for want of a better word ) hit the buy now then came around two days after he said he would arrive, then decided to haggle the price only after I stripped it down for him to inspect it for any rust.. That included removing the tires off the rims. Needless to say I was not impressed and told him that its best to leave and save his money to get his parents married. something like that
sorry about thread jacking  ( like hell I am ) so to keep within the boundaries ... what colour paint for the chassis :) :)
