I'm heading out to the Ashley and Waipara to product test the new MAXTRAX in pea shingle for the aussie makers. If interested tag along, should be interesting.

hi there, i'd been keen to come along have a go if you think my truck could do it, (3L trubo toyota hilux surf, no mods/no snorkle) havent got much experience in terrain like the waimak, havent done any deep water crossings before. I'd be up for a chat though or a ride in someones truck just to see how things are done. I sent you a txt though.
cheers

and just to add i wouldn't get to worried about a snorkel for this weekend i'd say there will be to much water about to be doing river crossings etc so we'll be sticking to the track/mud

thanks but already said to a few people we would do this track so beter stick to the plans but if we have time after we may be able to find you or meet up because id love to see how well they work.
you could always come on this trip and hope we find some mud to give them a try in and then maybe go for a play in the pea shingle at the waipra after if your interested?
leave a contact number for the day if you can

as dave said there wont be many if any river crossings. your truck should be ok through most of it as long as you have some good tow hooks (preferably certed 4wd ones) so we can town you if you get stuck, depending what tyres you have you may be limited in some ruts but the tracks we will be on mostly duck on and off the main tracks and stock banks so most the time you can find an alternative route.
turn up on sat and we can have a chat

hey, dont no what tyres im running, i went out for a quick play last night at the waimak, went fine, got stuck once just threw it into low gear rati oadn reversed out also in 4wd mode, didnt slip and slide so i think they are multi terrain tyres, 8mm tread on them front right is 6mm, tow ropes i jsut have a thick rope like thick meaning 1cm or 1.5cm thick?? ive towed a car with it before but ill go out try buy one, if you could tell me where you can get them?

4wd acc on montreal street by the tool shed. (Just down from the moorhouse lights on the right.) or 4wdbits.co.nz for tow ropes.

Might be keen for a spin if I get that hub sorted. Picking my little brother up from boarding school in the morning and I know he'd love to go.

Think I will tag along with you boys. See you at the pub at 1100. I'll bring the MAXTRAX, we may get to use them.

In my opinion, anyone who runs the Waimak tracks sans a snorkel is flirting with potential disaster. After the heavy rain we have experienced many of rutted tracks are going to be holding water, the ruts are oftentimes deep, and even the seemingly innoccuous can trap the unwary due to off-camber angles exposing one's air intake to possible water ingress.

Fair comment, i guess its always a gamble when water is around, You can limit the potential risk by following a truck that has a snorkel so you can see the depth and condition of the ruts/water.

As the conditions have changed due to this rain, this trip may no longer be suitable for stock standard trucks, rated hooks will be required (not such an option to climb under your truck and hook a strop around your diff if the whole thing is under water, and the same goes with the digging option) I would recommend descend a/t's at a minimum but suggest mud's and a snorkel. We may scope out the track in the morning and confirm if the track is suitable or not.

Keep in touch with nick (comilux), and be prepared to get wet and muddy, bring your recovery gear, spade or shovel and a good sense of humour

hey guys, thanks for the help, went into that store on montreal street, thats for that, bought me a "heavy duty nylon webbin" rope, supposidly standard club tow rope, it 9M and has 20% stretch, has like 8000kg min break weight. Anyways, went past the waimak today, its pretty full, msot of the shingle is udner water on christchurch side anyway. How do i know if it is canceled?? if its raining do you guys still go or you just have a drink at the pub and a chat? Or you like me and love driving a muddy car, makes me feel manly :)

ill be at the pub rain or shine and we can decide from there, been raining heavily today so defanatly going to need some decent tow hooks, recovery gear etc. snorcle would be highly recomended but if keen to duck into any holes first and see how deep they are.
hope to see you all there.

cheers for a good day guys, had a good day as passenger in nicks (comilux) truck, should be a couple of pictures when nick gets around to it,
Lots of holes and ruts full with water, still hard a hardish base, should be fun when it all turns to sticky mud :D
