holden3.8/hilux

Hi, Im thinking about putting a vn 3.8 into my 92 double cab hilux.
its currently a tired & firsty 2.4 petrol.and have heard that the holden motor is a tidy conversion .just wondering if anybody knows any thing about it .

I cant really add to much to Supra's post except that a toyotaV8 conversion into a independant front drive adds alot of time and money to the conversion becareful when ordering adapotors as not all manufactors are of a high standard. This applies to holden conversion kits also The last one the customer brought himself, the bell housing, the bearing carrier needed machining and was a pig to fit ( if you do deside to do this conversion email direct for the suppliers I have found to be ok) With the added power expect some front diff problems. I have done several ToyotaV8 conversions but have found that the supra m series to be more useable power. V8's tend to lose traction high up in the revs where the 6 cylinder tends to pull thru a greater rev range. My own weapon has a Supra motor and is very competive out running and out climbing most vehicles around these parts. (jungle can tessify to this )I have resisted the urge to replace it with an 8 and would rather like to go to a 3litre twin turbo 6 cylinder

Thanks for the info guys .I like the sound of the supra motor .Ihad thought about the v8 but had heard the computers could be a bit tricky
with a manual.What age supra has the 7m-ge?

The computors for the Toyotas are a mission and by far the best idea is to ditch it big time. When buying a Toy V8 make sure that the wiring loom is at lest 500 mm long. I have found a Link computor to be the most effective but very pricy to get installed, or maybe the local auto sparkie is adding a new wing to his bach.
( computor $3000 purchase and install
the toy v8 $1200
fitting $1500
exhaust $350
radiator and fans $800 and on & on & on...........about $8000 easy
The M series motors start in the early 80's and are still being manufactured in a slightly different form today (Quad cams EEEhar!!! ). As for the M computor even a corgie delivery 4wder could wire it up in a few hours. I have found the hardest part of the M swap is trying to find a manual bell housing to suit the gearbox as most appear to be autos or have a different gearbox bolt pattern.

Go for a spin in a V6, V8 or Supra Lux if you can. I'm in CHCH if you want to see the Supra or V6

or if you are in the North Island Rotorua only too pleased to take you for a spin in a 8 ( Superlux???) or a 6 ( Hyperlux ) or both. Bring change of underwear and its your shout

thanks for the offer .But I reside in South Otago.Do you know if the 1jz-gte would bolt to a 92 hilux 22r petrol box.

You could ask the guys at Central 4wd in Queenstown.... they could probably point you in the right direction....
