MT/Rs to fit Hlux Surf

Post by PAID »

hey guys.. i wanna put some muddys on my surf for an upcoming fundraising kaper. i think ive decided on the MT/Rs.. but im not sure if they'll fit. money a bit tight right now, so a lift is temporaily out of the question.

is it worth putting muddys onmy existing 15"s ? and do the MTRs come in that size

im know nothing about rubber or rims, so use small words ;)

thanx in advance for any help given

Ok, you're missing some of those words you were refering to... 15 is the rim size. Normally 4WDs have either 15" or 16" rims, and you normally stick to that size rim for whatever tyre you are going to use.

You may have heard people talking about tyres like this:

31 x 10.5 x 15

The 31 means they are (approx) 31" from the grount to the top of the tyre.

The 10.5 means they are 10.5" (approx) wide

and the 15 means they are designed to fit a 15" rim

from memory the Goodyear MT/Rs come in a 35, a 37 and a 40" height - none of which would fit a standard Hilux without tearing themselves and the guards to bits.

Rule of thumb with a Hilux ute:

31 x 10.5 x 15 - will fit, no mods
33 x 12.5 x 15 - will fit with a 35mm body lift minimum (or a 2" susp lift, but will rub under flex)
35 x 12.5 x 15 - will need a 50mm body lift, and preferably suspension lift, and also some panel mods around the inner guard at the front.

Rule of thumb with a Hilux Surf:

31 or 32 max. 35mm Bodylift will fit 33's, but they are hard on the front IFS diff. 35's - don't go there unless you have the ability to fix 4WDs and have spare cash...

Hope that helps

Cheers

thanx steve. i was under the impression MTR came in 31x10.50R15 LT.. i obviously misread the website.

oh well, back to the drawing board

any suggestions for muddys? as mentioned, i cant afford a sus lift as yet, but could probably handle a body lift easily enough

if it helps.. i'm currently running 265/70 r15

MTRs do come in a 31 inch.

Steve explained the imperial sizing. Yours are 265x70x15 right.
The 265 = 265mm across the tread
The 70 = 70% of the tread width, this is the sidewall hight from rim to outer edge.
15 = 15inch rim (go figure :roll:)

Confused????????? :? :? :? :? :?

As for a suggestion............. 31x10.5x15 Firestone ATXs. Did 35000km on a set back in the boring days with the Surf, still had 10mm tread on them. Loved them. :D :D

Firestone Wilderness ATs were the nightmare tyre for Explorers from memory, not the ATX's... and I seem to recall a lot of the problem was underinflation on a big-ass heavy american lump o' steel.

The ATX 23's are a well respected tyre with good wearing and good grip... Conans tyres were close to new when he suddenly realised he had outgrown them... and heres why:

However they would fit your truck really nicely.
