Very Strange Landcruiser not turning off and hard clutch

Post by crizpy »

heya i have a 70 cruiser 1987 with 13bt ,have a very strange problem Im hoping someone has some ideas, when im offroad Mostly only happens offroad But its not very often,, Say if i was to go out 4x4ng for the day it may happen twice..
the clutch goes real real hard to push in and out and at the same time it does that if you try turn her off It keeps running and ya have to stall it off..
If ya pump the clutch while its Hard it makes no diference.. clutch fluid is top notch..
does my cruiser have some kind of power assisted clutch like a safari? maybe i have a bad/old wireing to it..
if ya pump the clutch when the 4x4 is turned off it goes real hard after a few pumps and this is what the clutch feels like when its playing up..
so to get rid of it ya just drive a few mins and clutch goes back to normal and if ya try turn off 4x4 It Now turns off.
doesnt make sence that these two probs are linked .. But i know when that clutch goes hard it wont turn off at the key..
what the hell is goin on???
any ideas appreciated

You probably have a vacuum leak.

The clutch has a booster which operates off the vacuum and when you shut the enigine off the key opens a solinoid that operates a butterfly valve on the inlet cutting off the air.

I would trace all you vacuum lines and look for any loose hoses or kinks.

Do you also get the handbrake light showing sometimes? The light is also an indicator for low vacuum.

good luck

great advise thanks for that I will have a look when i get a chance,
well I do get the handbrake light sometimes but not usually at the same time clutch goes hard, I think i get it when my rear wheels are going over ruts as my handbrake cable when the handbrake is on is pulled tight against the shocks because extended bracked hasnt been fitted, but that was just my theory, but come to think about it I may of had it showing when not going over too rough terrain..
where am i likely to find the boost lines and valve? on top of motor around turbo area? or do i follow some lines close to the clutch master cylinder? of down near gearbox..
thanks very much for your help

maybe my boost gauge is connected to the wrong hose as I fitted this recently? it reads correct pressure about 9psi, would this be lower if i had a leak, i will also check the joins on the gauge line .thanks

This wont be related to turbo boost pressure. There is a vacuum pump on the rear of the alternator, there is rubber hoses (fairly small dia from memory) that go to a small vacuum tank (about 100mm dia and 100m long) on the driver side guard. From there acuum lines go accross the fire wall to the back of the motor where the VSV valve is, another couple of lines go to the clutch booster and brake booster.

Sorry if the details are incorrect but i am working from memory as i got rid of my BJ about a year ago.

I also have the not turning off problem - seems to be when it gets wet, when it dries it comes ok. I've put it down to the wiring getting wet and continuing the connection when the ignition has cut it off. but that's just surmising.

Can't comment on hard clutch but I may have had that problem once or twice - not remembering tho so it can't have been a major.

Dog chewed through my vacuum hoses a while ago. I repaired and connected them best i could figure using a similar vehicle and have had no problems what so ever with vacuum issues that I know of.
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

i too have the not turning off issue occasinally..... i belive it is a vacum leak/faulty switch. below the intake there is a lever type thing that you can push ( i think, or pull) and it kills the engine, havent been too bothered to find the exact cause as it only happens rarely, and is easy to just pull the lever!!! ( and doesnt cost anything haha) I also think it is related to use in water/wet area as i dont recall it happening at either rallywoods or whanga road,, both trips i did were in dry spots :D  :| with no touble. bring on the winter lol! :|
i used to Cruise, now i PATROL

The vacuum solinoid that activates the intake butterfly is located at the rear of the engine on passengers side about half way down the block. on a 13bt this feeds a diaphram actuator located on the air pipe accross the engine from air cleaner to intake manifold.

Have a play with the butter fly to see if you can kill the engine by turning it, next suspect the solinoid if it has vacuum. I think it is open when the key is on, so car will turn over but not run if it is stuck open. i guess the diaphram could also be faulty??

I had a switch wireed into the solinoid circuit which worked as a good kill switch and security.
