80 series cruiser main & big end bearings
80 series cruiser main & big end bearings
I want to do the main, big end and thrust bearings in my 80 series 1HD-T. Can anyone tell me if these can be done without removing the engine or gearbox from the vehicle.
Re: 80 series cruiser main & big end bearings
big ends can be done in place just by popping the sump off and bell housing support brackets. to do the mains and thrusts you have to go much deeper as its a split base block

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
Re: 80 series cruiser main & big end bearings
I figured the big ends wouldn't be a problem. I relise alot more would have to be dismantled but can the mains and thrusts be done with the engine and gear box still in the vehicle. I don't really want to lift the engine out if I don,t have too. I know it wouldn't be as easy but as you know there is plenty of standing room under my truck if its possible.

Still have to split the gearbox/bellhousing/ flywheel off to remove the crank. I'd be pulling the motor out unless its just bigends.

I ended up just doing the Big ends. Will do the mains and thrusts another time when the engine has to come out for other work.

Missed this thread
You can replace the crank shaft thrust washers as they are two piece and you can slide them round and out. You can also replace the lower shell of the main bearings (which is the shell the takes most of the load). Thats what i did to my old Safari.
Some times if your lucky, you can also slide the top main shell round and out, but unlikely. I managed to do that on a Triumph 2500 once

Not possible on the 80 series as Wopass said its a split block. Could only do the big ends in place. Safari is obviously a different block construction.
