Terrano Winch

Post by kiwipete »

Well I have finaly got around to completing the winch brackets for my 10000lb Runva winch.

Brackets are all welded, just the bumper to cut for the winch drum recess and the winch mounting plate to cut to length.

Then its a simple case of bolting it all together. 8)

I have not decided on the final wiring setup on the electrical side yet as I wil be putting in a second battery for it.
In the meantime I will temporarly rig it up to the main battery.
Think I will place the isolation switch in the cabin, using one of those red saftey hat switches.
Image
No chance of that being accidently switched on.
Im still awaiting the arrival of a 24V style corded remote as seen in th picture below because I do not like the 12V ones, anyone want to do a swap? I have small hands. :(

Photos to follow later tonight of progress to date.

Here are some pics of progress so far, more to come tomorrow.

Side brackets, made from bits of steel scrounged.
Image

Extra bracing added, again odds n sods I found.
Image

Painted with "Black Guard", I love this stuff.
Image

Winch tray marked for trimming, 6" of the ends came off.
Image

Removing the bumper, I hate this, knuckles get skinned every time.
Image

A naked front.
Image

Bumper cut to allow winch drum recess, I need to add some bracing under it for the spotties, its a wee bit flexable then get it powder coated.
Image

It really was this dark as I inserted the last bolt to secure it in place, flash diddnt do the picture justice.
Image
It looks a little low in the front, but it is actually the same dimension as the nudge bar that I had on it.

Things left to do.............
Wiring.
Tow hook placement, have to have a think about where to put these.
Move aircleaner to allow for 2nd battery, means re-routing the snorkle hose and re-mounting the washer bottle.
Replace the winch hook with a rated one.
Some basic bar work on the ends, unsure what I want yet. Oh, and a hoop over the top so I can see where the front is.

Oh, and test it of course.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Lastly some pictures showing the mounting in the light of the day.

Side profile, almost got it level.
I however do need to crank the torsion bars up a fraction as the extra weight has made it sag a wee bit in the suspension.
I think I will mount the tow hooks almost in-line with the rear mounting bolts.
Image

As seen from underneath.
Image

A slightly clearer front profile.
Image

All in all, im pleased with progress to date, considering it has all been done with a warehouse grinder, a borrowed drill and an aincent arc welder on the cobblestone drive. No accurate measuring and machining of parts here. 8)

Further to the finishing touches, im thinking of designing someting along the lines of this to finish it all off.

Image

Today I got some more cable, and heatshrink tubing to extend the main leads from the solenoid to the winch as the ones supplied are about a metre too short.

Might even have it running for the weekend yet. 8)

put in an in cab control switch next to the isolator switch, makes winching and driving much easier.

Like pathfinder says

Dont muck around with plugging the remote in and out and trying to keep the lead from getting tangled up with everything everytime you use the winch. Put some in cab controls in, you've got to wire in your relay isolator switch anyway so stick them in at the same time and just tuck the remote away somewhere for when ever you might need to use it. Makes things much faster and easier 8)

Nice idea but pretty redundant when you have a wireless controller  Lets you winch at the wheel, get out have a squiz, winch while wandering around outside, put the deck chair out with a nice cold coke and enjoy the action with the other spectators while still in control

That reminds me of my mate in his 40 series years ago that was a smart arse and turned the hand throttle up on his PTO winch and got out and watched while the thing winched up a bank untill the anchor tree gave way and watched his truck dissapear down off the end of the bank into a pile of shit

The only problem I see with winching and driving is visibility.

One is taught to have the bonnet up for added protection shoud the rope break, better to munt the bonnett than the windscreen.

I wil stick with the hand held and wireless remotes, the last thing I want is to drill holes all over the dashboard for extra switches, but thanks for the input anyways chaps.

Well, the winch is all done, wired and ready for some serious testing on Sunday when I attend an advanced training day.
Did i mention that im having the eye re-done at Cooks and a new hook added on Saturday? I just dont know about the rating or standard of these two items, so in the interest of saftey (Jerry are you listening?) they are being replaced.

Tow hooks were mounted on top of the winch tray where it bolts to the side brackets, as this was considerd the strongest point of attachment, and it will also mean they are up and out of mud etc when/if the enevitable occurs.

At this advanced training day, we will also be trying out the Lan-Cor ground anchor, I will be taking some video of this in action, as my truck will be used as one of the test trucks. 8)

I shall report back after the event.
