Hi guys,
Not sure where to post this so moderators - feel free to move it!
Looking at buying a rego lapsed old Landie. Can I A-frame tow it without re-registering? i.e to events?
Or can I register it as a trailer? (and then tow it to events?)
Or Farm rego it? (and then tow it all over the island on a A-frame?)
Any legal eagles know the ins and outs of this??
P.S I asked a WOF inspector and he didn't have a clue!! Will ask the local cop tommorow - not sure he will either!!
Cheers and beers...

Re: A frames
Can be a framed, no rego etc required, only stipulation is that it is in safe condition to be towed. lights may be required after dark, ring the LTSA they can confirm this

Re: A frames
go for it, the rules are there aint no rules lol its basicly like flat towing a car....no rego needed or even taillamps
i a-frame my zuk but have wired in a trailer plug for courtesy to other drivers and for night driving....
just make sure you have safety chain etc and make sure where the a-frame mounts to vehical to be towed is strong.
hope this helps

From Tech Forum thread wrote:If an offroad vehicle, for use on private land only, is being towed on a public road using its own drawbar, is it required to be registered and have a WOF? Should it be registered as a trailer? Graham Waters, Auckland.
Land Transport NZ says that as the vehicle is not being used as a motor vehicle on a public road, it does not need to be registered, licensed or warranted, and neither does any vehicle under tow. However, a vehicle under tow must be in a safe condition to be towed with an A-frame or a drawbar. The legal requirements are the same as towing with a rope, and can be found under Section 19 of the Traffic Regulations 1976. A guide to safe towing can be found at the Land Transport NZ website (see link below) or you can ring the police, as they enforce the law.

Re: A frames
got one that came off an LJ80 that I may part with. Let me know if you want pics etc. Its pretty basic
Re: A frames
Cheers LP but I am after one that I cn modify or build for my vitara.
I have an idea to slide some heavy wall pipe through the front round cross member and use pins through the a-frame into this to act as the attachments and swivels.

I am about to get an a frame attached to my old mans vitara in the next week or so. I was just going to get the guy to make some mounting points on the ARB bullbars but using the front crossmember sounds like a good idea. As soon as it is done (buy friday next week) I will post up some pics.
