hot gearbox

Post by tracta »

Hi all.

a quick question with hopefully a simple answer. I have a 91 td27 terrano - 2 door. It has recently had the clutch and gearbox replaced. the gearbox gets hot over any sort of distance, seems to be about 30ks then it starts to heat up. it doesnt appear wether I go fast or slow. the only thing I have noted is that when I leave for work in the morning (about 6 usually) it doesnt heat up, yet when I go home it does. the journey to work is roughly 80ks over the rimutaka hill ( those from wellington will now it - for every one else its a big winding hill).

does anyone have any thoughts as to what this may be caused by ?

all the work was done by a mechanic ( and I am thinking about taking it back - again !! went back becuase clutch was slipping after 7500 ks) im hoping its something simply and I can do it)

Cheers

don't quote me on it but i hear that the fill plug location is to low on some of the boxes. you have to fill from the gear stick location. to low in oil will cause high heat due to lack of cooling.

Could it be as simple as:

- Morning ambient temperature is cooler and you are driving downhill

- Afternoon ambient temperature is hotter (i.e. summer) and you are driving uphill

Two different sets of conditions causing different loading on the components generating heat.

Also, when you say hot, how are you measuring it? Just by feel and touch or a temperature gauge.

Yup the early Terranos had the fill hole cast way to low in the houseing try draining it then re fill with correct amount of oil through the gearlever hole

You wouldn't have happened to have just removed all the carpets would you?

Most people are amazed at how much heat is generated in the transmission tunnel. And with the factory carpets over it, you would never know. Just a thought

I know that when I used to tow a three ton trailer, that the heat given off by the gearbox was unbelievable. If it hadn't of been a safari then I would of been concerned. The mechanic's told me not to worry

no I havent removed the carpets, it comes up through the carpets hot and is hotter underneath them (as it would be). it will be good in winter - unless something breaks first.
