I've read of this being done and am interested in pics or descriptions of anyone who has done it.

shouldn't be to hard, i've heard of plenty of 24 volt ones for running winchs off. just fit 12v alt instead.

I removed the aircon compressor from my truck and fitted very easily, a voltage regulated 12 volt alternator in its place. I have a battery box and heavy duty battery bolted down behind the rear seat. I use this to run most of my 12v accessories including car fridge etc. I have a red charging light on the dash that goes out when engine started to keep an eye on charging system. All works primo.
