Your transfer box is a split transfer case which Toyota started producing around 1980, all the earlier transfer cases are different and you cant swap over the manual engagement. Have a look at your 1975ish 40 but its unlikely its had a split transfer case put into it
Hey Chris, I'm just about to switch from a vacum operated to a manual 4wd actuator.
Haven't got into it yet but have had the vacum unit removed on the transfer case which leaves the same lever as is visable on the manual system. I'm planning on using a manual lever from an older box which I reckon with a little modification will fit in nicely. Should be a bit easer than splitting the transfer case.... although I haven't tried it yet
If your vaccum pump was worn out ,you may also have problems with enough vaccum to operate the brakes.
