Pajero locker
Pajero locker
Hey guys. Ive just purchased a 1991 swb nh pajero 3litre v6.
After reading up on this site have completed the spring and suspension lift, but am now after a good locker for the diff. I cant afford ARB so that is out of the question but was wondering what others thought on auto lockers or even the factory lockers that can be available.
There is one on trademe at the moment http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =142034108
1) whats the best option for around the 5-600 mark?
2) Would this sort of diff be suitable to put into mine?
p.s. am also after a snorkel if someone can help out.

Re: Pajero locker
The info you need to know is what diff ratio your truck is and what ratio the Trademe diff is.
Re: Pajero locker
Hi thanks for the reply my diff is 4.875 according to the trans plate but the auction states that his maybe 4.89 Im guessing that this means 4.875 because as far as i know that diff ratio doesnt exist in pajeros

Re: Pajero locker
I think some factory ones fit and some dont and never will, the Paj guru's like wacko and NJV6 know all that stuff. There should be plenty of good info on Paj lockers if you have a look back through the ORE archives

Re: Pajero locker
I've been trolling through the forums for the last couple of weeks trying to get enough info to make a decision but eventually decided to post a new topic. Thanks for the reply though sadam.
Re: Pajero locker
guru? when did i become a guru? what qualifies me as a guru...? haha..
right. my personal preferance on lockers is for selectable ones such as arb and the factory one. i have never driven on an auto locker so dont know what they are relly like, i just dont like the idea of not being able to decide when i do and dont want it engauged. i do know a few people have them and would never go back tho so they cant be all bad.
the one on trade me would be great for you (assuming it is the correct ratio, but you could dismantle it and put your crownwheel and pinion on it) as you could just bolt the entire diff unit in. but as it doesnt come with the computer or compressor i wouldnt want to pay to much for it. they seem to go for about $7-800 with the compressor and ecu usually. mine has been strong enough so far but njv6 broke his. i think some of the engauging teeth on the locker centre sheared off. i havent heard of this on others myself tho. rear axles seem to be a more common problem.
if you dont get the locker off tardme, kempys in auk quoted me $900 in dec i think. and that was the head only. then you still need the ecu and compressor and the left side ( i think) axle is shorter on the locker model so you would need to shorten your current one.
keep an eye out for jtops being wrecked. most of them have rear lockers in them, and you would be able to get the compressor and ecu at the same time.
if you find a diesel jtop with locker, chech if its got 5.285 ratios in it (most diesel jtops do), if it does, grab front and rear diffs, and the front drive shaft to as its longer. then you get lower ratio for bigger tyres.
i love my locker. it transformed my paj.
to tired to think of anything else useful. but hope that helps a bit.

Great work appreciate it.

ooooooo you sod!!!
Yes, you do need all the bits. Switch, compressor is below the rear seat on the drivers side. There is a compartment there which you pull open. Its small, about 10 cm long.
The ECU is left rear behind the interior trim where the 3rd row seat would go and can be a bugger to get out. If it is not going onto a Pajero then don't worry about the switch and ecu, just use the compressor, but you need a special type of relay to work it. There is also a switch on the diff that activated the light on the dash which is quite useful as it doesn't alwasy go in. This can also be used without the ecu. Needs a bit of wiring.
If it really is a 4.900 out of a 2.8 tdi then I am sure you don't need it. I'd be happy to take it off your hands to replace the one I shore all the teeth off......

Re: Pajero locker
thanks for that , i will grab all the bits as the wagon is still complete, i only found out it was a locker yesterday when i was looking at the console and saw the switch and though wohoo
, i might use the whole rear end in my trials truck i am building as then i have the discs already sorted on the back.

Re: Pajero locker
Hmmm, It's going to be hard to wire it all up if it's not into a Paj
Especially getting all the loom's.
May as well send it to me.
But seriously I digress, Upon thinking about it, You won't need the loom and ECU as it is designed to work with the super select 4wd with inhibitor's so it can't be activated over 6km/h, must have centre diff locked, blah blah so don't worry about the ECU.
For a trials set up, it may be too slow for you. they are not nearly as quick as an ARB which run on such high pressure. They are run on 6psi and can take 30 seconds to engage if the teeth are not perfectly in line. Unlocking is the same, they won't unlock untill there is absolutly no load on it at all.
Hope this helps, Glen

Re: Pajero locker
thanks for the info, the speed issue wont worry me as it will be either in or out for the hazard, plus i could never afford a arb locker as my whole truck will be built for less than the cost of a arb, will post a pic when i pull it out to make sure it is the real thing, thanks again.

Re: Pajero locker
Well I bought the Locker and the guy i bought it off is refusing to get the compressor, ecu or switch out for me, even though it was implied in the auction, i could have it if i wanted.
So if anyone has got these things to sell/give away, send me a pm.
cheers

Thanks appreciate that.
Re: Pajero locker
Dude, thats very poor of him, I hope you give him some shit about it. The compressor is of absolutly no use to anyone as it is locker specific. They are worth nothing to anyone as they don't just crap themselves either.
What a muppet.

Re: Pajero locker
He reckons that the inside was caked in dried mud so he couldnt get into it. (bullshit, i reckon hes just lazy) anyway trying my luck on all TM auctions at the moment.
Re: Pajero locker
i will try to get to my one tomorrow and if i get it and as NJV6 says i dont need either bit you can have for a box of bourbons and the freight if you want.

ps NJV6 can i run this locker off a air supply such as a dive bottle to eliminate the compressor.

Yes but make sure it is very low pressure.... It runs at about 6 psi.
Hell, you could put a line into your helmet and blow into it and lock it!
'Hold on a minute mate, just gotta catch ma breath for that next hill climb'
'Yea bro, no hurry'
'I thought this was team work'
'Na man last time I unlocked it I got a gob full of diff oil so your turn!'

Re: Pajero locker
well i went and got the pump and ecu , i see what you mean about the little compressor, how it could be caked in mud is beyond me , the paj i got has lived on gravel and the pump is not even dusty, the ecu has,MB886520, X4T63371M,4617 on it and was in the left rear quarter behind the trim.if this is right raiknn pm your address and will send to you, if you want i can email a pic to see if right bits.

Could you not run higher air pressure to ensure a positive locking and eliminating the long engage/disengage time?
edit for spelling.

Re: Pajero locker
i have a 92 3ltr with a 4.875 open diff, tossed up weather diff lock or lsd, went lsd picked up a complete truck with 4.875 lsd, grey all bits, manual trans, 2.5ltr turbo, but has collapsed bearing, cant use manual trans as i'm auto,

Re: Pajero locker
Just thought i would post a follow up.
Managed to get the diff in. Had to swap the crown and pinion to get the right ratio because of the tit i bought it off. Anyway this took about 4-5 hours all up including removing the axles etc to fit into the new diff head. Wiring, i decided to do myself and took approx 7 hours, with about half that time spent staring at the wiring diagrams in the workshop manual (library sourced) All up reasonably easy to sort out.
Diff and axle = $380 + $130 postage
Compressor, switch, and ECU= $120
Diff Oil = $50
Diff Bearing = $50
Brake fluid = $14
Wiring = $34
TOTAL = $778
