Offroad Express future direction

Post by Bubba »

I guess this really only applies to those in the greater Wellington region and it's bit of a blog sorry

Over the last 6-12 months many of you will be aware I have been fairly outspoken with my online disagreements with Jerry. People have also commented online and in person about this so I have decided that this needs to be for public viewing;

Jerry is a mate, He's a bloody good guy, he spends countless hours organising trips in his own time. He is always willing to help out and on trips always brings all those extra things that we mere mortals sometimes forget. He is kind, considerate and generous to a fault. Anything I say to Jerry or about him is out in the open and I count him as a mate.

(Jerry, I apologise ahead for presuming what you think) I believe that he feels strongly about the future of Off Road Express and the direction it should take in the future. This is where we (me and him) depart ways. He wants it to go more like a club, and I like the loose bunch of like minded friends and friends of friends, not overly regulated etc etc. I believe that there are clubs that already cater to the level of organisation that Jerry tries to install here. Is that not why we have different sites; Offroad-Express and ORE Assn???? Saying all that it is worthy to note that neither I nor Jerry have any more say than any other person

it's not personal it's just a difference of opinion. I have had many people (online and off) agree with my thoughts and comments but they rarely express it, in-part because they don't want to offend Jerry on a personal level. But if you want to be the sites most prolific poster and Mr Supadupa Organiser then expect some flack and don't take it to heart. I take a fair amount of flack from time to time but leave my ego at the door and take it in good humor, as it is intended.

Bring on the flak.......

I must admit I am a newbie to this forum, but I like both aspects, there are times when I enjoy a well organised club trip, and times when I enjoy a privately run "invite only/loose" type trip. I think there are valid arguments in both cases. If the ORE Assn has all the rules and regs for club trips, and we all have the option to join and do those trips, them maybe this forum should be for the "loose" type of trip, to encourage and enthuse those that attend the "loose" trips to join the ORE Assn, as I intend to do.
Just my thoughts,

Ta skid, and the following comments aren't directed at you or anybody else in particular buts lets not forget its not a Bubba/Jerry thing we just look at things from different prospectives

Lets not forget that Jerry does a hell of a lot of work for us around here and it should be recognised as such

I think clubs have their place but I enjoy the loose band of like minded guys getting together to talk about, fix, socialise, help each other out and even drive the odd track together. You arn't forced to pay dues, attend anything you don't want to and there is no bureaucracy or hierarchy (to speak of). You just drive and break shit and then ask how to fix it....

I am hoping this thread raises awareness and we can have an intelligent debate and I welcome feedback but this is not a finger pointing exercise

just be a member of both, like me :P
If I want to go on a loose organised bunch of mates trip I do, and we have plenty of them down here, It's only an assn trip if we organise it that way, then I enjoy the (potential)benefits of liability insurance, should something a bit nasty occur.

It dosent really bother me, we're a pretty diverse range of people on here and all have different ideas etc

If I think somethings too regulated or over organised or heading down the wrong track I have the personal choice of not bothering with the thread or post and from time I just ignore them

I do not frequent this forum much at all now for this reason, I'm actually almost going to stop attending the trips aswell that ORE hold which is a shame. Theres alot of guys in the Wellington crew (alot of really good guys) but alot of them newbee's that are actualy not very nice people (I'm not saying i'm the big old 4x4er here because i'm none of those  i'm still learning (everybody is) but theres a couple that have showed up in the last few months and think they know everything and want to run the show. Jerry your a ####### legend that would help anyone with anything and I respect you for all the trips you have run and for the time you have spent. I wish ORE didn't go down this road.....but will someone give me a txt when ORE goes back to the good old days of posting up that your going into Rallywoods for the weekend and whoever wants to come turn up.

it seems for a long time in welly people have all only gone out in one group, perhaps its natural progression for one now large group to split into several smaller ones of like minded people and mates that still go out most weekends but only run organised open invite trips every now and then. i understand jerrys point of view because your group up there has become large (with a large liability) and large groups need alot of organising, but do you really want to stay with the large groups.

It seems you welly boys are having the same debate us CHCH boys had when we first set up the Association, it reared it's ugly head again last year with a few casualties and now it's back. Watch this space.
