Re: purchasing disco
They break diffs easily unless you've got a sailsbury, the tierods bend easily, cloggy always has a spare in the back and the V8s are really thirsty.
I think there was a pretty good thread abouth them on here somewhere last year?

i love the cruiser it'l b mint once its going again been out of action far to long

Re: purchasing disco
The diiffs arn't so bad....
If you are running 33 inch simex then yes you will run into trouble.
But for a tow vechile/weekend run around/shiny trips it'll be fine.

Re: purchasing disco
If you want a tow vehicle, it's hard to go past the power and economy of a Landrcuiser 80 Series VX 4.2 TD. Go with a Disco and you will need deep pockets.

Re: purchasing disco
go the 80 series, had a 94 lwb safari turbo last and the cruiser i got now eats it, wicked tow, play wagon, only thing i like about the disco is the sound
Re: purchasing disco
You're going to get great unbiased advice from the toyota owners.
But yes it is hard to look past a 24v 80 series if you specifically need a tow rig.

hmmmmmmmmmm
Cruiser VX 1995 200,000km & $22,000
OR
Land Rover Discovery 1995 132,000km & $5750
That's a lot of driving to make up the difference in fuel price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If at first you don't succeed .... Get a bigger hammer!!

Re: purchasing disco
I agree with furgus, they are fantastic wagons for the price. I would much rather spend money on fuel than depreciation.
p38a range rovers can also be had very cheap.
1994 and later have the 24 spline diffs (as opposed to 10 spline) and are supposed to be much stronger. The motors arent actually too bad on petrol depending on how you drive em.
Tie rods are pretty easy to fix, just get a stronger one made.

VX's can be had for some good prices now if one shops around, or is in the right place at the right time, e.g.:

Re: purchasing disco
yeah the vx is an awesome truck but one the price of them and yes if you shop around you can get a good deal, and 2 if i bought 1 i would get all carried away it would soon have simex lift bar work etc etc etc. or i would find myself chuckn the diffs under my 70. i just think the disco is good value for money....
ahhh FAK! now i duno wat i want. still needa sell the my lexus hilux first

Re: purchasing disco
Just bought a early EFi Range Rover - same chassis, engine and running gear as a Disco. It has 50mm lift, snorkel and tow points/hi-lift slots all round. New warrent and Rego.
Cost me $1500 - show me a Toyota V8 for that sort of money that isn't shagged to death....
I say go for the Disco and run a 2 inch pipe from the centre box to the back - mine sounds SO good it should be therapy for suicidal nutters...

Re: purchasing disco
haha i love the way you think!! i could listen to a v8 all day long
how the hell did find a deal like that? thanx for yr in put

Re: purchasing disco
It was on trade-me for about an hour with a buy-now. I couldn't click it quick enough!!
Meeting the guy was a breeze, the truck was exactly as described and it drove back from Ak to here without a worry.
He had upgraded to an auto Discovery and swopped over the winch bar, tyres etc
I plan on doing the Laurie Sanson next season with it. I just need to sell my Audi to fund the tyres etc.....

Re: purchasing disco
WOW GOOD DEAL!! BET YOUR STOKED!! SO YOU GONA DRIVE A CLASS AT LAURIE SANSON I'M GUESSN

Re: purchasing disco
Yeah A-class for me. Not sure I am going to make the next round as I need to sell the Audi to fund tyres etc....
I have a winch plate here so I am going to fab up a front bar around that. Side runners and steering guard too.
Other than a few bushes here and there it drives fine - I will be fitting castor correction bushes to the front end as at present at 100K it wanders like a drunk at closing time!
Get it sorted and next year I can show those little Suzukis how to drive - lol

Tempting. But now doesn't work. Try again in six months.
