I hoping to sneak in a trip to Macetown before Xmas. What are the track conditions like (mainly the 20-30 river crossing). I have 92 Prado no snorkel and this concerns me most.
Any other pointers/must see along the way tips appreciated
you wont have any troubles mate - we went in last week in a surf and mu and the water was only about mid way up the wheels - we have snorkels but there were plenty of surfs and other standard trucks - including a brand new prado without snorkels and they all get through ok. The track is basically a road real easy but nice place for a drive.
generally you will be fine but always pays to be careful i have towed afew trucks back to arrowtown after they took in water. the first 4 or so crossings are the worst hop out have a look and pick ur line b4 you go through, the river is low at the moment but that can change very quickly. this year was the first time ive been up there with a snorkel, remeber where ur air intake is and ul be sweet.
Go for it. I went in there in a Terrano on OME suspension and no snorkel. No problems. Narrow road, watch out for mountain bikers and dudes on horses. Practice your reversing skills as you will need them and pick youe time to go in: most people trek in in the morning and out in the afternoon: go with the flow.

Reversing not a prob, I've had lots of practice. Me and five Pathfinders and one Patrol once reversed from the Cascades to Bendethera in NSW(long story) . God bless our trip leader, that was one of the best overnight trips I've been on
