Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
Hey Guys,
Just wondering if there is such a thing as some form of locker for a Daihatsu Rugger, 2.8TD?? Even a lockrite mabye. The diffs are the sailsbury type.
I have heard that the 'Genie4x4.com' place sells lockers for heaps of things, however it appears to be shut down at present.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Dick.

Re: Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
lockers used to be avaliable easily for them, however not the last time I looked, LSD's are avaliable but these are hard to find, may want to change the diffs over to hilux etc ones which will mean you can put lockers in.

Yeah i was looking at doing that, however i have just upgraded my springs and shocks, well in the middle of doing it now, and if i was to put new diffs under it, it would be dufficult i think, to make them work with the new springs. Wel, that was what i have been told anyway.....

Re: Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
I wonder how compatible the diffs and half shafts are? ie could you replace the diffhead easily?
Brian Howat in Welly may be able to make you one but this may cost a bit?, not sure if you can get a lockrite off the shelf?? may be worth checking?

Re: Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
Ok ok. Thanks.
The diff is the sailsbury type, so i think they are similar to the DYNA diffs....mabye???
Where would you suggest that i enquire about a lockrite?

Re: Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
sorry to burst your bubble but lockers for daihatsu's are like rocking horse shit to find. few have them and every1 wants 1. at the moment there are no off the shelf options. be cheaper to swap to hilux diffs all you'll have to change for memory is the length of the drive shaft and the flange where it bolts on to the diff head. also may have to change the spring mount on the diff.
the bonus of doing this mod is that with a fair bit more moding of guards you'll have the ability to run 33''s due to the gearing.
the rugger diffs have a ratio of 3.36 i think it is, the most common hilux's have a ratio of 4.5 or there abouts i think it is (feel free to correct me on that if im wrong)

Just out of curiosity, the Dana diffs seem very similar, would you think there is a possibility of a locker for one of them fitting?

Re: Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
not to sure but i know the guys over in aussie have tried nearly every thing. but they may fit youd have to take a heap of measurements and it would be a waste of money if they dont. not to sure what you'd have to measure but ask the sales rep for them and they might be able to help out.

True true.

Have they come up with anything do you know? other than the axle swap?
Cheers.

Re: Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
nope they havent come up with anything. some have done the axle swaps but their cert laws over there seem to be much stricter than ours. so most have just left them pretty standard.
there was talk of a place in germany producing a locker for about $3500 au. but most seem to think that it is far to much and wont go near it. also no one seems to be able to get a good feedback from the place. to me it all sounds a bit dodgy.
im going to put hilux diffs under mine when i have the money and have done the body swap. also im goin to be putting a set of safari diffs under my offroader when i get the dollars as well.
what part of the country are you from?

Im from Taupo.
I was looking at doing a toyota axle swap, however have just put new springs in it so im not to sure how that would go down with an axle swap..

Re: Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
wouldnt matter as far as i no you might have to change the mounts on the diff and get a different lower plate (the bit that goes under the spring) made up then again the toyo diff may just bolt straight in,
pretty simple mod to do with the vehicle already being fully leaf sprung just take a few measurements of:
how far apart the springs are
how wide the springs are
how much wider the new diffs will be( this is the determing factor in weather or not you'll need a new lower plate and Ubolts)
i think thats all but there maybe a couple of things that i have over looked.

Yeah true. That does look relatively simple. However, cause i have got lifted springs in it now, i would not be too keen on keeping the SOA that toyotas normally run on thier diffs, as the truck would be way to high.
How do you think it would get on with the ratios thou, giving the fact the we have got 3.36 ish in our diffs, and the toyo's would be around 4.1 or sumthin.....wouldnt that mean slower on the road???

Re: Can you get lockers for Ruggers???
well the ruggers are already setup with cross over steering so it will just be a matter of getting a longer steering arm an engineering shop should be able to sort some thing out for you.
as for ratios it would mean slower on road speeds but it gives you the option of running a larger set of tyres and still be able to crawl when off road. im running 33's on me offroader and they have geared the standard diffs up a hell of a lot. but if i was running 4.1 or 4.8 it would be much improved.
