Runva 10,000lb winch

Post by kiwipete »

Well I must say that the winch is a total success indeed, im rapt with it. :wink These winches are as good as any other electric winch in my opinion.

I attended an advanced training day on Sunday 3rd March as a “trainee trainer” not expecting to be selected as the winch guinea pig; nor realising that we would also be doing a debut for the "Lan-Cor" Ground anchor for the NZ4x4 magazine.

I must say I was a little hesitant and nervous at first; I had only had the rope out a foot and had not had a great deal to do with winches at all!

Well we certainly put both of them through their paces, and they excelled in all that was thrown at them.
We did a bank climbing demonstration, it’s about a 40ish deg bank 15+ feet high.
Winched her up and over from the bottom. 8) Here we used both the straight winch pull and also an angle pull using a snatch block attached on the ground anchor to another vehicle. This latter one was to demonstrate how winching can be done around corners etc. The ground anchor had to be repositioned a couple of times as it was in hard stoney clay type soil.

Now it was back into the thick mud where we were earlier in the morning, truck buried to the running boards where we winched it about 20 feet through to the hard ground on the other side. I didn’t think it was so deep there either but the mud was over my gumboots! Just a couple of re-sets of the ground anchor were made here to get it deeper.

Next it was off to the beach down through the Kowhai River to test it in shingle.
The shingle was like a coarse type pea shingle, rather soft under foot. I reversed down toward the water line, over a bank and was able to winch up and over the top of the shingle bank. We had to re-position the depth of the ground anchor a couple of times here too, but still managed to winch onto the flat.

Lastly winching up a sand bank! I was really impressed here at how well the Lan-Cor held as 1/2 way up the brakes were applied and the anchor held as the truck was pulled about 2 meters skidding on the sand!

I will post more shots of the day when I get the photos.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

I can only confirm and agree with what Pete has said.
Same story here, so far the winch has met and exceeded my expectations. It has pulled everything we have tried so far.
Got it fairly warm once and it developed a squeek, which disappears when it has cooled. It took a lot of long and hard pulling to get it to that stage though. Guess now I can use this as an early warning sign that things are getting a little hot should this happen again in the future.
There is a small delay when using the wireless remote controls which was a little disconcerting at first but it is also very nice to be able to stand at a safe distance when winching. My wireless remotes work at over 40 metres away, well above the stated 15 metres on the box. If precise control is required, just plug in the wired remote.
The only other thing we noticed is the fairlead is a little narrow for the winch drum. And the mounting plate where the fairlead bolts on is a little weak even though it is made from 5 or 6 mm steel. But these are petty things really when taking the rock bottom purchase price into consideration.
Overall these winches get a big thumbs up from me. See Craddock Spares (Land Rover parts) in the UK have just started marketing these under the Champion brand (not related to the spark plugs I think). Can't be too bad if Craddock's are prepared to stick their name on it.

have to agree as well, have a 10000lb on my cruiser and although my first one had a loose bolt and the magnet came loose andd hit the armiture the company I bought it off replaced with a brand new motor no worries, and sfter have used next to other brands and after first having the piss taken out of me for my cheepie winch I had the last laugh as mine was still running cool as others started to over heat. make sure your batteries are up to the task I run twin 715 amp 17 plate industrial batteries and have found the more amps you have in reserve the cooler your winch runs as it does not strain as much under load.

Her are two links to some of the video footage of my winch and the Lan-Cor ground anchor tests from the other weekend.

I hope to pick up my ground anchor in a week or so, so I will then post some more footage of it in action.

When are we doing the next group buy of winches, this winch.co.nz is asking way more than the group prices.

Don't expect too much out of another group buy (if he chooses to do one). When we put together that first deal it was an exceptional price because it was an exceptional marketing opportunity. Getting the winches out into the market like that has provided a huge amount of positive feedback because they are good winches. They are definitely worth what he is asking for them, especially considering the fact that you get full support by a local NZ supplier.

I tried mine out (12000lb model) for the first time (under real load) over Easter when we did the Tailings track on the West Coast. It did some seriously hard work dragging my whale through there and there was a really big hill climb that everybody had to winch up at the end that it pulled me all the way up. I guess I used it about 5 times in the end on the one trip to pull me out of some really sticky situations where I couldn't even be moved a little bit with snatching!

The wireless remote is brilliant! It makes it so easy because you can be anywhere within about 30 meters. It was good to be able to just hand the remote out the window to someone who could see what was going on when they were spooling the rope, etc.

Just watch what you do with the wireless remote coz you dont want to see your vehicle dissapear back down the hill with noone in it if the cable or winching point fails as my mate did showing off with this PTO winch and hand throttle years ago
