I have a Hold button in my Mazda MPV 4WD, it appears to lock up the torque converter to give some form of engine braking down-hill. At the same time it stops the auto from changing gears, so if the auto is in 2nd, it will not kick down to 1st under any circumstances.

hold, holds the auto in gear. Power gives a bit extra for overtaking, going up hills etc.

The hold button does exactly as it sounds. It holds the tran's in gear. It does so by dissabling the kick down switch, so you can floor it and it won't kick down. The box will still change gear in relation to speed though.

In low range, the hold switch also allows you to lock the transmission in 2nd Low.

The power switch makes the gear box change gear later alowing the engine to rev higher before each change. This uses more fuel but provides greater performance/power.
