Snorkel for a Prado

Post by snow »

Has anybody fitted a snorkel to a Prado :?: Mines a LJ78 series which has similar guards but not identical to the 75 and 78 series Lancruisers.

Yes :) I got mine from Fully Equipped I think, although it came trade at $190 or something like that.... its actually designed for the 70 series if I remember rightly, and so the template doesnt line up right....

HAd some pics on here, but I cant find them.... grrr.....

What do you want to know? I spent an hour measuring lots of times, then 1/2 fitting it

I'll tell what i did, and i think it's the best way to go. Starting with Safari brand 70# cut off the pipe that goes thro the guard and move it backwards about 40mm, and get it plastic welded back on square to the snorkel body. This requires cutting a half circle and turning it around ,youll need to use your imagination about what im trying toexplane. This will put the pipe inline with the inlet pipe of your aircleaner ,then find a rubber air tube to join between the to.

Also remember if you did go this way ,that the template will need to be modified to the new hole position before drilling the hole thro your guard.
Hope this helps.

Ah Ha...Safari snorkels, thats what I've been looking at.
Although Safari makes 4 for the 70 series Cruisers.
I've been trying to work out which one has the best/closest fit guard and plumbing wise. Which ones did you guys use :?: I can't find the listing for Safari brand 70#

Use the top one on your list, throw away all of the plenem ie, the square to round thing, if you use that part , you have to CUT part of your inerguard, but by using my method there is no structrial cutting.I said move the pipe back 40mm (correction should be about 20mm)and youll see that there is a unobstructed line from aircleaner intake pipe to the repositoned pipe on the snorkle.

Hi Snow
I used an Airtec TJM Snorkel, part No. 011SAT0268N, it has this part No. 011MB00168N cast into the plastic.

I bought separately a 90° rubber elbow and having altered the inner guard like OB says and rotated the filter body anticlockwise slightly found it fitted fine. I made an adapter reducing the pipe size from the elbow to the plastic inlet. For this adapter I just used two pieces of large dia. radiator hose that fitted inside each other. The hose clamp clamping the elbow also clamps the two hoses onto the plastic inlet.

N.B. I found through testing that you need to have all of the plastic inlet tract from the filter housing to the engine side of the inner guard as part of the system. This device significately reduces the induction noise that you hear at your right ear!

Like all snorkels made for a slighlty different body, 70 series I think, the template does not work well.

To properly seal the system I used lureathane sealer not silicone. The snorkel is made from Polyethylene and the noise reduction plasticky bits are Polypropylene, niether of which like to be adhered to. I used a primer made by Sikaflex, Sika215/290 DC which is by the smell of it the glue used to weld/stick plastic pipe fittings together. (What the gluesniffers like) The Sika people reckoned this primer would allow the Lurathane sealer to adhere to the plastics.
With the primer the sealer does work, without it doesn't, yes I tried both!
Will post some photos shortly.

I had an airtec too, lined up perfectly with the air cleaner input. Only had to put one hole through guard too, ie outer only.

Where are you based? My truck will be back up here tomorrow hopefully so you could havea look..

I heated the snorkel a bit at the front end, with a hot air gun so as to fit the Prado guard a little better.

Thanks for your kind offer. I'm in ChCh at the moment, although I'm trying to get away this week. If your truck is around that would be great.

Hey Bill

I put in the diff breathers this afternoon with el cheapo inline filters at the ends. I tested the old breathers by blowing on the old hose, air came out no probs. But when I tried to suck the caps shut tight as a drum as I thought they would. Probably explans why water was sucked thru the swivel hubs, too much vacumm from diffs cooling down. Also explains why there is a hissing noise when i removed the filler plugs to check for contamination.

You'r on to it! The air in the diffs/transfer case must be able to move freely as temp changes.

The T/C breather is located at the upper most part of the t/c. Hard to see and get to, as it's between the floor pan & top of t/c. See if you can pryz off the sprung loaded cap and fit your tube over it. I think there is a G/B breather also on top of the box.

If you can't see the t-case breather, just run your hand above the filler plug and then over the lip. You should be able to feel the little steel cap on the top.

Op's , the filler plug is half way up the rear of the T/C. It also is the oil level plug.
